The reason why a good soundsystem sounds better at higher volumes than a crap one is the distortion that happens as drivers reach their limit. A good system will have amps with a high headroom , efficient drivers and be designed to crossover between the drivers within their working range.
Most cheap and nasty " club" boxes are a 15" with a 1" compression driver ontop. That means the vital 1k - 3khz speech range is bang slap in the crossover point between the drivers. That means the lower end of the 1" and the upper end of the 15"...... not a good thing. Better designed systems like F1 have gone for crossing over outside this range and allowing one driver ( the 8" on Axehead with F1) to do all the work. The NCA boxes I use as well cover this range by careful designing of that vital area, making sure phase response and delay times are correct to remove any muddiness in the sound.
Cutting it out on EQ...? What like Rock,n,Roll and Jazz Club setting on cheap car head units...great! Not sure your gonna like it tho....
Compression...no thanks just turns it into one level muddiness
Best answer is to hassle your local "disco" into getting some decent kit! And if you get some nice professional earplugs with 10 /20/30 db pads you can choose how much you wanna hear anyway!
