Derren Brown - one-off programme

Will that link spoil the programme?

Not really, or I hope not, though I'd prefer to watch it and try and work it out for myself. But he says himself, it's just a mixture of tricks and skills and playing about and showmanship.

Yetman, that woman with the sorry tick box... oh dear.

What was wrong with that?

His appeal (to me at least) is based on his mental tricks, the way he toys with people's minds and uses subtle persuasion to influence people. It's difficult to tell where the "trick" is occuring, and it keeps you guessing. Visual tricks like the one with the table, are just cheap parlour tricks, and easily explained. It takes a lot of the joy out of it for me.

Ah, fair enough. He does know a lot of that stuff inside out and can usually work it into his routine quite impressively, but reverting to typical conjouring, well, you expect more from him I suppose.

He did it under the guide of showing how these thigns were done in the 19th century, but it was so over the top and clearly faked that it left me with a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.

This is obviously staged. YOu can't mind control the outcome of a racing event without some backstage chicanery.

That worries me though. Why would Derren go through several series, stating that nothing has been staged, there are no stooges etc, only to suddenly go back on this? He didn't use the disclaimer during "trick or treat" which made me quite sceptical about the series.

That was because some of the people indirectly involved were actors - the ambulance crew or something. Not anyone who was actually being subjected to his trickery.

Do this for mutiple people and only broadcast the one with all succesful guesses?

ok, so how do you know this? i think he would use something a little more ingenious to stage his tricks + there would be plenty of people out there to testify how he does them.

it's great when people claim to know exactly how he fools everyone, when in fact they don't really have a clue. all part of the fun i guess

That would make sense, and has made me slightly happier.

I don't think DB would have the audacity to film several versions of this prgram, and only run the successful one. He's an intelligent man, wouldn't leave himself as wide open as that. There has to be something else to it.

Given that he can't actually predict the results of races, it's pretty much the only way he can have done it. I think it likely that the whole point of the programme will be at first to show how he can appear to be doing it, and then show how he tricked us and the participants.

A big reason why many magic tricks work is that the audience don't believe the performer would have gone to as much trouble as they have done.

He said he's gonna explain how its done on the show so we should sit tight and wait to see what he says :)

Not that I'll believe him anyway the shyster

Maybe it's as simple as convincing the participant that their horse is the one they see winning when infact it's not. Sounds too simple but this is what he did at the dogs when he convinced the bookie he had the winning ticket. Looking forward to finding out.

DB = Uber Evil Genius. And if I ever see him I'm going to run away as fast as possible.

I won't believe him. I think that he tries to make the audience think that they know what's going on, as it increases the appeal to think that you "get it". For instance, when he approached a group of american teens and asked one of them to phone a friend, and he'd make the friend say the word "tricycle", he dropped several words related to "three" or "tri" into the conversation, and said lots of things that suggested a wheel, such as "turning" and "revolving". I don't think that this was what made the guy say tricycle, I think that it was something else, and this was a device Derren used to mislead the audience into being on his side, by believing that they knew how the trick was working.

Win. That sounds very likely.

i don't think that the blog actually confirms that they filmed several versions of the same show and only used the one that worked at all. it just sounds like a disgruntled fan who was disapointed that she didn't get a kiss from him after finding out he was gay.

anyway, i'm looking foward to watching this programme more than anything since...well his last series

there's no other way he can do this. mesmerism and sleight of hand are one thing, but 'psychically' predicting winners on the nags? no chance.

yes but that would be really silly.

Well that was pretty cool. Utterly predictable all the way but good. I didn't know whether he was just going to keep the £4k and give it back saying "Here's your money, now stop gambling!" or do the all-six tickets switch thing, but even working that out (£24,000 for all the tickets, minus the £4,000 she gave him) it's still pretty cheap TV :p
