Depressing songs

Hurt - Johnny Cash
Don't Take Your Guns To Town - Johnny Cash
Ramblin' Man - Hank Williams

&

Almost every Blues song ever made, with the obvious exception of 'I'm So Glad' by Skip James.

Johnny Cash's version of Hurt and stacks and stacks of Country songs.

Kenny Rodgers' "Ruby, don't take your love to town" has a really depressing narrative for example.

Hmmh, good taste that fella.

Soho Square by Kirsty McColl is a right choker made particularly poignant by her early death.

Love will tear us apart
obviously.

For a friend by The Communards brings a lump to my throat.

bright eyes - something vague

depressing but very fucking good!

When I first read your post I thought for a second you meant the Art Garfunkel song about the rabbits - you know, 'Watership Down - You've Read The Book, You've Seen The Film, Now Eat The Pie........" :o :D

I always find 'The Drugs Don't Work' by The Verve a real downer, myself. I actually have a cassette tape of 'Urban Hymns' with that track deliberately missed off it.

Recent tunes that i remember being depressing/upsetting

Immortal Technique - You Never Know
Placebo.....and i can't remember the name of the track
Dire strates - Brothers in arms

I think that whole album is fairly downward to be honest. Don't know why - for me the whole thing seems to be undercut by this really black despair. Some of the songs I really like as well - and theoretically they should be quite "up".

Probably just me - looking back, that period was the period of the sell-out, when I really started to make a lot of money, and the space left by innocence and passion was replaced by drink drink drink. The undertow does feel entirely alcoholic - and The Verve just happened to be playing in the background.

About the only song to really consistantly make me well-up, is Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah"

*sniff*

Oh - Billy Braggs "Man in The Iron Mask" comes pretty close too.

nine million rainy days
have swept across my eyes
thinking of you
and this room becomes a shrine
thinking of you
and the way you are
sends the shivers to my head
you're going to fall
you're going to fall down dead
as far as i can tell
i'm being dragged from here to hell
and all my time in hell
is spent with you

I've got into a self indulgent sad song afternoon cos of this thread.....

Just listened to The Myth of Trust by Billy Bragg

:(

And This Womens' Work by Kate Bush. Bloody love that tune

Another Day by Roy Harper
Song to the Siren by Tim Buckley/This Mortal Coil
New Dawn Fades by Joy Division
Always Crashing in the Same Car by David Bowie
Dum Dum Boys by Iggy Pop

Just listening to Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me and it occured to me that it is one of the most depressing songs ever. I love it, very downbeat..especially the scary intro.

You should hear the Low version. Makes the Smiths sound like the bloody Go! Team :D

seconded, especially the 'live at the royal albert hall' version, the timpany drums are beautiful but sad.

:(
thirded, i were there, surely 99% of the great songs are sad songs, don't get me wrong, i'm a happy soul, but maaan, the sad songs are the best...

Lord, Can You Hear Me? - Spacemen 3
On The Beach (album) - Neil Young
Tonight's The Night (album) - Neil Young
Strange Fruit - Nina Simone
Adagio For Strings - Samuel Barber
Wichita Lineman - Glen Campbell
Laughing - David Crosby

all you happy-go-lucky sunshine people!

anyhow's for never having to leave your bed again you have:
codeine - barely real
american psycho slowed down to a dull shiver
(they also do a spellbinding cover of joy division's atmosphere)
emily - boxing day blues
the sound of someone's pulse turning into concrete. If you listen hard enough you can just about hear it crack.
depeche mode - blasphemous rumours
stories to tell your children when they're old enough to blame you for everything.
