Demo: Stop the War - No Trident - 24 February 2007

I was seriously surprised at how large the demo seemed. T Square was quite full when the first speaker announced that the demo was still setting off at Hyde Park. I went to the pub and missed the speeches and so have no idea how long it took for the end of the march to arrive.

Sally from Whitechapel has just phoned in to the Galloway show to complain that someone had called in and said no working class people were on the march - she said she went to work at 13 and worked til she was 70 ('you can't get more working class than that!') and was pushed in her wheelchair on the demo. A few people have bemoaned the lack of media coverage and the daft police 'estimate' of numbers.

Did anyone else find themselves in a weirdly good mood after this? It somehow seemed very worthwhile in a way that I can't quite justify rationally. :)

Our contingent were stupidly happy. Must have been the songs we sang. :)

If they do bomb Iran though, the next demo will not be a happy one. ( )

As George Galloway threatened afterwards. :D

I missed his speech. Was it good (is that a stupid Q to ask on Urban?!)? A few callers into his show have congratulated him on it.

I think the man is an utter cunt but he also happens to be an awesome public speaker when he's in the mood. Mark Thomas was rather good as well.

Galloway predicted riots if they attack Iran. Didn't see Mark Thomas. If it left you in a good mood, you should go and sort out The Sad Anchor on the general thread, who seems to have a massive beef with the point of the demo/all demos.

I know what you mean.
I think the point behind demos like this isn’t really about trying to influence the government but about trying to keep what remains of the anti-war movement in this country together in case they do go for Iran.
No one there expected it to make a difference but it’s good to vent and experience being part of a larger movement.

those thick middle easterns need to be shown this by their capitalist media dont they.

Er... bit surprised at the insinuation that im a patronising twat, but what the hell, does it getting shown on Al Jazeera help the process or not? What media do most middle eastern residents consume that would indicate to them anti war feeling in Europe?

Also, what are you doing politically now that youve left the SWP Matt?
