Dell releases a beast of a laptop

Comparing a Mac to a pc is just unfair, they diffrent hardware, because less Mac's are made they more expensive, also they do have better components,
Err, what? I think you'll find that many of the components are sourced from the same manufacturers as PC components.

A Leica camera will take a crystal clear photo, and is also silent, there are the only cameras used in courtrooms.
I think you'll find that Leica digital cameras are actually made by Panasonic, with Leica remodelling the case.

They're no noisier or quieter than any other comparable digital camera and much as I like the cameras, they're certainly not the best in their class, or the best value for money.

What I'm wondering is - who is this sort of machine aimed at? Only really rich 20-somethings will be able to afford it, which wouldn't make it worth Dell's while, and it's clearly not for the business market. I'm assuming 30-something gamers here but does that really comprise enough people?

It's more advertising than a real product, they get headlines and so when you think about getting a new laptop you think "Dell do some really powerful machines, let's look at them".

The standard laptop is 'only '$2,600 which isn't that expensive for, say, someone needing a very powerful work/gaming/entertainment all-in-one laptop.

As so many threads have mentioned there are maxtor hardrives and there are seagate hardrives, there is sata and there is scsi, there is ddr ram there is drr 2 ram and so on.. mac have historically had the better parts as standard where as a pc, aless the buyer digs deeper there not going to get great parts.

No, no no no nononnononoono!

In the case of mac and dell laptops there is nearly no difference in parts, all SATA drives, all DDR2 (mostly 667) RAM, all Core Duo chips, the specifications are near identical and the mac range is notably inferior to some of the dell range.

mabye not this time, but historically mac has been better.

ive never had a mac, its just a known fact.
I don't own a rolls royce, but anyone knows there engines are good, even tho there very expensive

Oh well, if it's a "known fact" then there's no need to provide any evidence to back it up then, is there?

I have a friend who has one, besides how do i know a rolls royce engine is good, as i don;t one.

Err, it may surprise you but some people's hearts will go all-a-flutter when they see the big processor, the ton of video RAM and all the glowing LEDs in a handy notebook form, just like some people go weak at the knees when they see what I view to be equally overpriced products like, for example, a Mac or a Leica camera.

Different strokes for different folks, innit?

Hiya!
No it doesn't surprise me at all. This machine will sell a bundle in the LAN-happy multiplayer gaming addicted Far East, and is the first taste I reckon we'll see from Dell, post the AlienWare purchase. The video ram is good.

I don't always see cheap as the cheapest option, mind - anyone buying a new computer may be totally limited by their finances, but in cases where they can raise a little more, it's always worth new computer buyers thinking not jsut about what they may need NOW, but also what they'll need in a year or two's time. This at least is Vista-compatible (but take a look at what Thurrot said about Vista last night. He's not happy).

I'm gonna resist the Mac/PC thingie for this thread - we have a nice and active one all about that somewhere else.

It may be a contender to alianware, regarding thinking ahead two years time, commercial software moves on pretty fast to make any top spec pc seem average in two years. For users who use linux and the like this is not a problem.

For gamers, which is the group this is targeting, it's always a problem.

Hi Lobster. Dell bought AlienWare last year I think.
Edited to add: Also the thing about Linux - it works and it's good and Linus released an updated kernel just this week I think, but it's just not a user friendly system, or at least not friendly enough for most non techy users. It is getting better, but it needs to find a way to make the system and apps easy to install - except that its the installation that is where the money is in the OS, isn't it?

Customer support, bespoke software, system analysis are some areas where open source finance is made...

Sounds fair. Still need to figure out a way to make it something approcahable to users who are not interested in complexity. This will eventually happen - Gimp is good, for example,
