So who else would people recomend for the super budget machine? If someone asks me about a very cheap machine, I'd point them at Dell. If they were spending more I'd do a bit more reserch for them.
Dell's budget machines are well built and great value.

We use them at work, they've never been anything less than excellent. Only going on that experience mind.
theny ou have been overly lucky on that one dells customer serive is notorious as being second only to that of hilton hotel chains in terms of mind raping their customers to the point of sucide...

My Brother, (software developer, worked on the bbc iplayer) is always the first person I ask when it comes to recommending hardware. I'm in the market for a compact laptop for travel, he recommended Dell. I was like, 'oh'. But then again, I don't use customer service, I ask him.

i'd wait till apple or sony 'invent' it :D:D

dell made laptops affordable first, except they only lasted 4 weeks.....

Init, I'll never own a Dell. They're the Lada of the computing world.

They're really not... they're the best budget supplier out there imho. Think of Acer, Advent, etc.. Dell is a long, long way ahead of them and getting better.

What put me off was using them a few years ago. All the computers at work were Dell and they couldn't cope with intensive design stuff. In the end I was given a wedge of money and was told to build or buy myself a PC (had to be PC) and I built a monster! I am sure they're OK for knocking out emails, MS Office and so on but try working on a 8GB+ image several meters across and watch them die. So unless Dell have pulled up their socks in the last three years then I wouldn't touch them. Really don't like them. Getting phone calls on my day off because the email server has gone down, or the till computer, etc. etc.

I quite like Acer laptops, cheap n cheerful :o

I'd rather have a Dell laptop than anything at the same price point, if indeed there is anything. Mine overheats and the screen's full of dust now, but it served me well, and the online support works as well as you'd expect from a well oiled corporate box shifter.

All my work computers have been Dell too and they work pretty well - I took it apart the other day and was surprised how well designed they are now.

Yeah, but any machines at a budget price and not designed with high-end graphic design in mind are going to struggle with that load. That's why Macs cost a fuck load more..

It was't a budget range dell it was one of their upmarket ones, still utter wank. Good thing I would say about it though, it made a great box for torrents :D
