Deep Fried Battered Mars Bar - the horror!

There used to be a restaurant in Edinburgh that did an upmarket version - Mars slices, deep fried in Tempura batter, with an Irn Bru sorbet.

Delicious.

I think you will find that Scotland has been importing exotic goodies like dates and brandy for a very long time now - longer than England certainly! :p :)
And tradtional English recipes like Christmas Cake, Christmas Mince Pies, and even a wedge of lemon with your fish, all require imported goods.

Trade into these islands has been going on for a very long time.

For example, garum (fermented fish sauce, a forerunner of Worcestershire sauce) was imported into Britain in Roman times. The jars have been found in many places, including the Thames.

Evidence of trade into Scotland from mainland Europe and further afield dates back to the Neolithic.

Yep.

I hear that it was bankruptcy following an expedition to Panama that left Scotland increasingly susceptible to the Union.

Or I might be confusing that with sommat else.

No, that is correct: the Darien expedition. The venture was beset with all sorts of problems, from disease, to the English in the region not assisting when they could have, to downright stupidity.

The English spy in Scotland at the time was Daniel Defoe, the novelist. He worked on the nobles and merchants to accept the Union. The idea was that their personal debts and the debt of the "Company of Scotland Trading to Africa and the Indies" would be wiped out if the Treat of Union was signed.

Here is a proper traditional Scottish snack:

A date and oat slice. From a relative's bakery in Inverurie. :)

Want! I'm pretty sure I've had something very similar in London, but a bit less oatey, bit more crumbly.
