Decent muesli?

The Dorset Cereals ones are nice, but watch the Saturated Fat, cos some of them are really high due to the coconut content.

Sainsburys in the green bag is nice, as is making your own using a base from Oats and Spelt.

I don't really like muesli but I make it for hendo and he seems to like it. My version is:

packet of oats from Lidl
half a packet of jumbo oats from Brixton Wholefoods
sunflower seeds
linseeds
pumpkin seeds
mixed nuts of your choice
raisins/cranberries
chopped dried apricots or prunes

I used to toast it in the oven but he never noticed the difference when I forgot to do that one time so now I don't bother. ;)

I recently tried that and its as good as Dorset Cereals - the normal meusli from lidl and adli is supposed to be grim tho (never tried it, just read about it on moneysavingexpert) once you get used to sugar free muesli, you'll find the sweetened ones too sweet. I chop up a small, fresh banana for sweetness in my breakfast.

Yeah, I never got the fuss about Dorset cereals - maybe cos I tried Lidl's Luxury Muesli first and it's a hell of a lot cheaper - Lidl rules

Sainsburys wholemeal muesli is also surprisingly edible, though not as good.

I much prefer a muesli without sugar. I sometimes buy a ready-made muesli from a stall in my local market and then add things to it. This one is sugar free. The best muesli is home made from a basis of oats with sultanas and nuts and perhaps dessicated coconut added. I also add wheat flakes when I can get hold of them.

One different thing I do with muesli compared to other cereals, is to have it with freshly squeezed fruit juice instead of milk. I understand that the Swiss doctor who invented muesli did exactly that. I mean the bottled varieties of freshly squeezed fruit juice rather than doing the squeezing myself.

Something i've started doing with museli that is totally delicious is getting a load of fresh blueberries, boiling them in a pan with a bit of water and a tiny bit of sugar and mixing until the blueberries have become a kind of puree. Then pouring the hot blueberry puree over the museli and mixing it in. And adding a bit of natural yoghurt.....really yummy!

I've not tried the Lidl "luxury" stuff, so I'll have to get some soon.

As for what I've tried, Jordan's is probably the best bang for buck that's not misery-inducing. Dorset stuff is really nice, but the price gives me chest pains.

sainsbury's basics does the job.

all the essential ingredients - raisins and sawdust.

put plenty of milk on and you won't notice the difference between that and the posh stuff :)

the normal stuff from aldi is like a mixture of dust and woodshavings :(

Sometime last year Waitrose had some 75% off deal with all Dorset’s Cereals. I bought something like 20 boxes of the stuff, still eating it now. Expiry Date is sometime the end of this year. Of course once it’s all gone I’ll have to come back down to earth and buy more affordable cereal.

Rude Health ones are nice - but VERY pricey. However, Dorset muesli is very nice, comes in lots of "flavours" and lasts a long time. They sell it, Tarannau, at the Costcutter at the bottom of Herne Hill next time you're heading Hootenanny way. It's £2.99 for an 850g box and they usually have 2-3 of the 8 or so available "flavours". :)

I used to make it but kept getting bloody moths from buying the ingredients from wholefood shops... (no names mentioned....) oh and I can't be bothered any more.

Yeah I ve found that alot of the wholefood shops not only sell the ingredients but also they seem to throw in pantry moth eggs for free. Bleurgh!
