Decent meals in one microwave?

Baked spuds are easy to do. Just wrap them in a bit of kitchen towl and prick them with a fork. 4 mins 1 side, 4 mins the other, depending on size ect. You can do bacon in the microwave. Mince meat, you can do that. And yes, you can cook chicken in the microwave. (do it in aload of juices of some sort, otherwise it'll be dry and skanky) Eggs, you can do eggs in the micro, you can get little omlette cooker thingys to do omlettes in it with. Micro in the bag rice is ok. You can also do couscous in the microwave.

Your taste buds will have to toughen up a bit, sounds like they've had it too good, for too long.

You could get a little bbq and do some stuff in that.

Why would you need to microwave couscous? Unless there's no kettle, but that seems unlikely in England.

Oh by the way, decent miso soup is good, just takes boiling water and you can sprinkle in various veg. See also couscous (feta cheese, red peppers etc).

Forgive my sounding a bit terse, and I do appreciate your advice, but I know how to cook. Really. I'm just asking about cooking things in a microwave.

I don't just pour water over my couscous. I like to cook it for a bit (in a saucepan not a microwave)

This thread is confusing. There is nothing good you can make purely in a microwave.

Apart from Alexb.

I disagree. You can do a nice bit of salmon in a microwave. And peas and asparagus and the like.

But I couldn't think of anything else. Hence this thread.

Then there's peas, Cod and a few spears of asparagus.

Or

Asparagus, Haddock in a white sauce avec Petit Pois.

Or

Delicately poached Skate, accompanied by al dente Asparagus and peas.

Honestly, the list is simply endless. :p

See those fresh pasta packets you get from Sainsburys et al... our ex lodger used to cut them open, fill the packet with water and cook them in the microwave (I know you're not going to cook "fucking pasta in the microwave") - and it worked!!

Just as as aside - we often cook pasta and then just throw in fresh chopped (cold) tomatoes, basil, walnuts and olive oil (or similar) rather than a cooked sauce. Very nice!!

You can also do VERY good sticky rice (as in SE Asian - Thai etc) in the microwave. I haven't cooked basmati rice in the microwave myself, but of course you can get those packets for that (as well as microwaveable Japanese rice from the Japanese supermarkets). I would do something like toss cooked rice with ponzu, tofu and thinly sliced peppers.

If you could get hold of a rice cooker/slow cooker you'd be laughing!

I have several recipes for the microwave. I have scanned one page of the book for aqua. If you pm me your email addy I can email you the scan. There's about 4 recipes on it, all meat based. If you want veggie ones I'm sure a page could be scanned :)

Jacket potato with beans is a great idea.

You can pretty much make any veg just by sticking it in a covered dish with a little water.

The thing that I find annoying is you can generally only do one thing at a time.

Bacon will actually cook pretty well in the microwave if you have one of those ridged cooking dishes.

And enough bacon is a meal in itself

chorizo cooks really well in the microwave, better than frying actually.
It spits like fuck though.

Also raw pork rind done in the microwave makes the best crackling. No, really.

Get proper instant noodles (Chinese or Korean, none of this Super Noodle shit), put 'em in a bowl and add hot water. Then add a raw egg and put in back in the microwave for 3 minutes so that the egg poaches. Then chop up some spring onions, chuck 'em on top and give it a stir.

That actually does sound nice.
