Decent Film reviewers

So does anyone else like going into a movie totally 'blind'? Or is it just me? I love sittin down knowin sweet fuck all about a movie. By butchers definition it means I dont like film. Ho hum.

Some films, yeah. I knew fuck all about "No Country for Old Men" and went into it knowing nothing about it and loved it.

No, I like going in 'blind' (though when paying I'm generally not so keen!); I caught How to Get Ahead in Advertising and From Dusk Till Dawn on TV without knowing what either were about which worked out really well because they both head off in a very mental direction  :D

If I'd read anything about either of them I would have not had the ride I did.

Oh, thinking about it the same happened with The Wicker Man (original).

How many movies get released in a week? How many are you going to see?

Unless there's a surefire signifier the movie is shit (it's British comedy, it has Danny Dyer or Tom Hanks in it) how you going to avoid seeing turkeys?

I have reviewers I trust and will take their recommendations.

Sounds like you'll go and see any old toss, which inevitably means you'll miss good movies.

Nah, I generally go with my girl or with mates who've seen reviews. I do look at at star ranking in the guardian or whatever and then consciously read no further. i like not knowing. I have seen some old toss on this basis tho u're right. Hmm.. what was it... SUPERBAD! christ. what a load of shit. got four/five stars across the board. Me = 0/10.

I like reading reviews after the movie tho. To see if I agree. Yes, butchers, I'll put my head in an oven or whatever.

Interesting discussion maybe to be had on another thread about music reviews. I do read those before downloading. No plot to give away I guess.

Woss and brown nosing celebs to go on his show, if that fails he'll have BBC presenters talking about their BBC show and other BBC presenters. Sycophancy at its most blatant. The fucking twat.

Never followed your own hunch? I came across darren aronofsky by hunch, fancied the sound of pi when I was going throug a clint mansell and david holmes phase about 11 years ago. Glad I did! lets get killed lead me to it. Quality album.

Yeh, course, but you still need filters / tips for the stuff you don't get a hunch about, otherwise how would you know to go see it?

I like Philip French for his knowledge and taste, but not Peter Bradshaw. I used to like Derek Malcolm, and that bloke who used to write for Time Out 15-20 years ago (does he still?). Geoff Somebody?

I don't hate Bradshaw as such, just don't trust his reviews.

I like Jason Solomons as a radio personality yadda yadda, but he has moronic taste in films

The guardian pair - if it's englsh ignore them. If it's euro, they're probably right. If it's american - gods knows. If it's asian - both out of their depth.

If you go by star reviews on Imdb you'll end up with lowest common denominator opinions. Good film writing is essential to keep up the quality in film-making. A Hollywood blockbuster may be critic proof, but marginal, foreign and art house films, which don't have massive advertising budgets depend on it.

I don't know Good foreign/art house films do tend to have good ratings on there. They just don't tend to get into the top 250 because not enough people vote for them.

Following a hunch is not the same as seeing any old random film totally blindly.

Peter Bradshaw does this thing of being really snooty one week, and then giving 4 stars to the fucking Fantastic Four film or something just to prove how 'down to earth' he is.

I do go to www.rottentomatoes.com - great site that. Well handy to have all reviews in one place - but it serves to show how wildly different the reviews for a film can be by different professional reviewers.

Thats why i'm looking for a regular reviewer who mirrors my tastes really

Roger Ebert is pretty good, but is US based so misses some UK films (not such a bad thing)
