Decent email provider?

Noooo. It has ads on it which you have to PAY to make go away.

I can honestly say I never notice them. Besides, I get it on my phone via pop3, so rarely log on to the actual client (which is vastly superior to the gmail one, regardless of ads).

Bloody hell, how long has that label category thing been there? And to think every thread about gmail I've been moaning how they don't have folders.

I *think* it has always had labels but now you can squirrel the mails away instead of them just sitting in the inbox with their labels on. Helps anality.

Another vote for Gmail. I think I have about half a dozen different adresses all cascading into one.

Forwarding is dead handy. :)

Sits nicely in a colourfully themed IGoogle.

Google reinvented email for me. Forget all you know about storing emails in folders and the like and just go use it.

If theres something you need, search for it.

At the same time, docs & calendars kick ass too.

*bump*

I'm a bit embarrassed to have to ask this question, but... :o:D

Currently, Virgin is my ISP, I have an @virgin.net email address, and I use Thunderbird to receive those emails.

I'm about to switch ISP. This will obviously mean I lose the virgin.net email address, but will all of my old emails (-in the Thunderbird Inbox) suddenly disappear too? :o:confused::o

No they won't. Thunderbird downloads a copy of each email. Just don't delete the account in thunderbird!

If I was you, I'd take this opportunity to set up a gmail account instead of whatever your new ISP email is, so you don't have this problem again :)

That's kind of how I pictured it in my tiny mind, but I wasn't sure. :o:D

(Y'know how Firefox allows you to export a list of your bookmarks? Does Thunderbird have a similar thing for backing up emails?)

Yeah, I've already done this, partly in anticipation of switching ISP, but also because Lycos closed their email service a couple of months ago (-which was what prompted me to start this thread in the first place...).

Thanks very much for the advice. :)
