true, in theory. but you don't own anything, the bank does.

I own most of my flat now - the bank owns about half of it :)

I've still got a couple of grand on credit cards though. Adding them to the mortgage is just too depressing

eta - that's not most then is it? It's half. This sort of inability to do basic maths is what gets me into financial trouble :o

£113 left to pay on the washing machine, plus £330 for the new mattress I just ordered...both interest free for 6 months (and which will defo be paid off by then - if not a fair bit earlier) = £443

I don't have any credit cards, so that's it.

I was a bit worried about my levels of debt, but I spoke to someone at the bank about it, and a friend who works in banking, and the banks don't start getting worried until you start owing large multiples of your salary. The lady at the bank told me not to worry as I owe about a third of my salary, roughly, and she knows customers that owe £60,000+ on credit cards.

That's the size of my mortgage roughly.

this thread is depressing :( i guess i'm having a bad day where all my money worries seem to be hovering over me. i have about £16k student loan (only graduated in july) and 2 very big overdrafts. and i'm out of work now.. i feel so lost!

About £13,000 of student loan debt, I remember them starting to get me to pay it back a while ago, the payments weren't even enough to cover the interest. Meh, not sure whether to worry that it'll forever grow to an unpayoffable size which is more than how much it's worth now, ah well, who knows?!

I paid off the last of my (non student loan*) debt today! :)

*just under 15k - thus far I've paid off £120 of this. :(

This time last year it was 10k. I got it down to £1500 by xmas but iv just borrowed another £1500 because iv bought new wheels.

:)

if you are doing a simple calculation of how much i owe to banks/credit cards, then i owe about £8-£9K i reckon.

however, i have the money covered in a savings account, and all the money i owe is on 0% interest deals.

so if you look at it another way, i am debt free.

(looking at it another way, my debt is actually making me money)
