Debt-free Club

get yer ass to lidl. it will half your food bill, and most probly be tastier.

Better still - IME - do as much of your shopping for food and other necessaries as you can in cash, and avoid supermarkets altogether if possible. It's a cliché, I know, but paying cash is much more 'real' than tapping your pin into a machine and keeps you more aware of what you're spending, and it's easy to get carried away in supermarkets with tempting BOGOF offers being shoved in your face all the time. For ultra-cheap fruit and veg, cleaning products and the like, the market (assuming there's one nearby) is the place to go.

This is very true. I've set myself a weekly cash budget for essentials & plan towards larger purchaces for a very long time now.

Although if you are trying to avoid supermarkets, you have to be aware that not everywhere has a good range of shops at hand & you can soon bump-up your travel costs & waste a significant amount of time by traipsing between them all.

Alternatively, I prefer to buy as much as I can on my (debit, not credit) card. That way when I download my statement to my budgeting software I can see exactly when, where and what I spent my money on, which makes me much more aware of how to budget and save.

either you get paid a packet or house prices are seriously lower where you are than in Oxford....

You can now get a 1 Bed flat in SW2 for £120k. Cheaper further out! So for a couple, 3.5 times there salary...(take the deposit off too...)

Heh – that’s pretty good…. I guess I’ve been looking for 2-3 bed houses, in a nice bit of East Oxford…. Everything is above £200k here…

You can even get 2 bed flats (some 3 beds) in SW London for under 200k now... and it's still going to drop...

hmmm, maybe i should be looking somewhere outside oxford and environs then! am hoping i can save up enough for a deposit before the market starts to rise again, although looking fairly unlikely... it's a balancing act, knowing when the right time will be!

Good luck all. I am debt free these days, having defaulted on my debts a couple of years ago, and it's a good feeling. Defaulting isn't for everyone, but if you've got an anonymous name and are willing to start from scratch it's a great feeling.

Sorry if its a silly question, but what do you mean by defaulting?

Just not paying the debt back. Taking the CCJs and the court actions and not caring. Having the debt eventually written off.

Yep. I imagine that I have CCjs against my name these days, but they don't know where I am to have delivered any summonses. Fine as long as I don't want credit, which I don't.

I'm lucky in that I have no debt whatsoever except for a few quid owed to a mate for my shopping. And I intend to keep it that way. It's a great feeling.

Mind you, if I don't get a job soon - things may be different by this time next year. :hmm:

Fuck all this debt free malarky, yeah manage your money but don't go over board. FFS you may die in the next few years.
This guy I know has not hardley gone out in the last 5 years as he doesn't want a mortgage, well fair enough, but its not for me. I would prefer to enjoy life,

I'm paying back about £800 of debt a month... it'd be kinda nice to see that come to an end.

aii, and soon it'll be worth even less! ;)

Actually, my little collection of streets has risen 4% in the last year. Why I don't know, but so far it's weathered the storm. And we got ours at £31k under list value and at least £10k under actual value (at the time) so I'm not worried

yup well it's value will still go down in the next year or so. anyhoos i'm only teasing - it's not as if the 35k i put into my house this time last year has practically been wiped of the face of the planet or anything! :D  :(

Mortgages are a bit different to personal loans and creidt cards and all that shite though :(

I've got mine under control anyway, pay a fixed amount for x years. I could fuck it off but I think I'm better off just paying it. Plus the amount I've paid back now, to fuck it off and go bankrupt or whatever would be foolish - imagine what I could have done with the repayments! :D

I was talking about zone 3, you 'nana! Besides, you're about 10m from zone 3 :D

I live way out in zone 4 now, but I wouldn't swap it for the world. My house is amazing, and under £200k

Yeah, but I'd rather move closer to town and stretch myself a bit further :)

Best of luck Chris mate, mrs and I are debt free* apart from mortgage. I worked 7 days a week most of this year and it all went to repaying my loans and cards. Good job cos mrs lost her job a while ago so we were living off my salary only. But she's now got a new job + she got 9 years redundancy  last week.:cool:

I'm still gonna do probabbly 2 w/ends of OT to get the extra bacon for a rainy day tho'.

*I've a cpl of scrappy little ton's with a cpl of mates which I'm gonna sort in the next few days and that's it.

Nice feeling.
