it's not a celebration of all pop music though, it's quite a tightly defined strand of it.

Yeah I missed that bit.

I'm not guilty if I like some candy pop. If you like it you like it, it's only pretentious to be ashamed.

This reminds me of when PieEye was dissing tribute bands despite being in the Actionettes which, to me at least, isn't really that different itself.

Oh bog off - we're so much better than a tribute band. At least we work out our own dances :p

Dub - I can't believe you started this thread and didn't see that it would straightaway get people on at you about PRoD. Muppet.

You're in my top three along with Day Glow Pirates and Sack Sabbath.

Guilty Pleasures, PROD, Tribute Bands.. an unholy Alliance.. different paths, same aim.. united in undermining the 'cool' Police.

In the Name of Rock and Roll we Salute You!!!!

guilt is a wasted emotion at the best of times but musically its just silly. I like what i like and really care if someone(dub) takes the piss beacuse of it.

I saw Guilty Pleasures at the Big Chill a few years ago, and they played an eight song stretch of songs we used to play at Club Beer. I was going "We used to play this..and this...and this...!" Only difference is, they made a mint and we didn't. Same with School Disco. But then both were prepared to get off their arses and market the fuck out of the concept, whereas we were too busy getting drunk. So it's hardly worth getting upset about IMO.

I agree, though, that GP has a narrower playlist than either PROD or Club Beer. We'd go from Britney to Metallica to Kate Bush to The Proclaimers to Neil Diamond - ironically, I don't think Guilty Pleasures would be that "uncool".

if you like it, like it. Don't like it under a veneer of wanky po-mo irony.
That is my motto. Except you said it a bit better than I usually do

it IS a big deal. because by labelling it a guilty pleasure, you're reinforcing the idea that there's a right and a wrong when it comes to music (or any art). You're accepting that fashion, social and cultural currency and peer pressures should affect what you listen to.

This needs to be resisted. I'd rather somebody LOVED something I hated than quite liked something I loved.

dub, i think you need to listen to some easy listening........

haven't you got a bit too worked up over this?
let's just face it twats are twats, whatever disco they are at but please don't begrudge me a bit of phyllis nelson once in a blue moon, vicar......

i could change me mind very easily though if was actually at the event, instead of chilling at yolk mansion with the barry white on

*agrees with dub* there are no such thing as guilty pleasures, just pleasure. if you're ashamed of something you like you've got a problem with cool, and if you want to be cool enough to hide stuff you like, you're a fucking tool.

oh god, i have to go to a party and bring a "guilty pleasure" whatever that means (as well as my two fave songs of all time which are obviously by Archers of Loaf)
think i'll bring Mr Brightside on the grounds that it's a fucken great song but I have no wish to ever meet or converse with its author
dunno quite what other logic to use

but for me, as a reformed Catholic , pleasures aren't pleasures without a tinge of guilt - it isn't about not being 'honest' or trying to be PoMo about it - it's just that all my pleasures are guilty!

Well after poking my head into the Guilty Pleasures tent a few times during latitude, I think Rowley's head needs to be put on a spike and exhibited for all to see.

Dub - How about a prod shirt saying "None of my pleasures are guilty"? If PROD don't do it I'm making my own.

Luckily there was plenty of interesting stuff on of an evening, so i wasn't reduced to standing at the back tapping my foot half-heartedly to 'hot in the city tonight'.

i went to GP at Hackney theatre few months ago with orchestra. was fantastic. i missed Terry Hall's song because i was outside having a fag talking to TV presenter Zoe Ball (who was having trouble getting in) about how much i was looking forward to seeing Terry Hall
