Death To Guilty Pleasures!!!!

Its only a title.....

What else would the 'theme' be called?

'A night of old but classic tunes, that you are coy revealing your admiration for'? :p

I don't get what the problem is. It's just a brand name, isn't it? I'm sure if you asked the people who like Guilty Pleasures if they really do feel guilty about listening to some cheesy old songs, they'd say no. They've probably got a soft spot for those old songs, just like you do. Real guilt doesn't come into it – it's just a turn of phrase.

It's a harmless vehicle for playing silly old tunes – bit like PRoD, really :p

not the case. there are records i like that i know are a bit shit, but for some reason or another i have a soft spot for them. Why should I feel guilty about that?
You shouldn't and no-one really does. 'Records that are a bit shit but for some reason or another I have a soft spot for' is a bit of a mouthful compared to to 'guilty pleasures' It's not a big deal, hardly worth a thread. :)

oh, it is. it definitely is.

it's a fucking blight.

if you like it, like it. Don't like it under a veneer of wanky po-mo irony.

daft cunts
I've always thought the whole ethos of PRoD was similar to Guilty Pleasures? The whole fake Socialist thing, the design, the eclecticism, the whole playing of the Nationale to clenched fists held aloft - what is PRoD if not po-mo irony?

the music ISN'T though.

and there is actually some intent behind the political imagery, it's mostly tongue in cheek but not entirely

But that's exactly what it is! And it's bloody good fun.

bollocks - any PROD playlist would show any number of new stuff, dance tunes, ska and reggae, hip hop etc.

Guilty Pleasures is pretty much 70s and 80s chart pop

It isn't?

see previous post. if you keep insisting that it's just cheesy pop and i've failed to notice it, i'll probably put a stop to it so don't push your luck, monkey boy :p

Is there? I thought it was just a reference to the fact that everyone brings tunes?

which in itself is making a point.

this is about Guilty Pleasures, i'm not going to justify the PROD ethos here, but take a look at the playlists and tell me it's just track after track of cheesy pop...

But PRoD is mostly fun or quirky tunes from the past. My favourite PRoD tune would get played at GP and so would a lot of other favourites.:)

not mostly at all. Partly...
and we don't play on the basis that they're cheesy, we play them because people think they're good tunes.

Hmm, I think you're splitting hairs but I sense you will not agree with me!

i'm not. The day Guilty Pleasures plays a healthy dose of jungle, hip hop, techno, indie, reggae ska and country you'll have a point :p

Two nights that have a postmodern gimmick. One makes millions so we hate it. The other is a cottage made organic fair trade gimmick and therefore much more worthy. ;)

I now understand why Dub is upset. It would be quite easy to get Guilty Pleasures and PRoD mixed up even though I agree the thinking behind the two nights is completely different.

This reminds me of when PieEye was dissing tribute bands despite being in the Actionettes which, to me at least, isn't really that different itself.

I still don't think it's worth getting upset about it. Just as long as everyone is having fun, that's what matters.

So if a load of punters bring some tacky 70s and 80s chart tunes to PRoD – because they think they're good tunes – then that's ok? But Guilty Pleasures – where people dance to tacky old tunes for a laugh, still believing them to be good tunes – isn't ok?

They're both good nights out, with a different schtick. Sorry, but PRoD is sometimes a vehicle for playing silly old tunes, whatever socialist imagery you want to dress it up in... there is nowhere else I would have danced to Britney Spears' "Toxic" (and hopefully never will again) ;)

oh, i can't be arsed. the difference is self-evident to me, but there ya go.

Guilty Pleasures still sucks balls though

Sean Rowley found an angle, gave it a clever name, marketed it like fuck and made a mint.

'ain't nothing more to it, imo.
