But, it would be better if you call up the company first, and ask who you should send CVs to, and then you will have a name to address it to which will look like you've made a bit more effort.

Actually if it was an advertised job that said where to send it, and it didn't include a name, I'd be quite annoyed to be getting phone calls from 200 people asking what name to send it to.

Even old school places give women some authority, usually in HR.....

It's for a foreign company that I think would expect things done the old school/ traditional way. Also in their own country there would only be Sir, I thought it might be a bit odd to suggest a woman would need a different title of authority.

One should commence with "Gentlemen," and conclude with '"I have the honour, sir, to remain your faithful and obedient servant".

and you have to put esq after your name, as in 'NVP, Esq.'
