Dear Pedestrian

I do realise that this is a cyclist thread...But pedestrians, I know cars suck and one day we might see the back of them, but if you don't cross at the crossings, insist on doing so in heavy traffic and with an iPOD, then do not be suprised as a car grinds you into bolognese.

Some bloke was driving the wrong way down a one-way street this morning towards me and I pointed it out to him and he shouted 'I KNOW' very crossly at me. So why are you driving down it then?, I thought

When I used to cycle through the City, I rode with a ref's whistle clamped in my teeth. I took great pleasure in blowing it really hard if a pedestrian stepped off the curb. Nothing better than seeing a City boy jump and blanche of a morning :)

i heard of a guy in new york who had to have a whistle surgically removed from his palette. it's kind of like running with a lolly in your mouth, except that the lolly's made of steel and you're going twice as fast.

Really? Wouldn't you let it go if something happened?
Mine's made of plastic and is on a string - I only put it in when I'm cycling through bits where pedestrians are making me swerve

only useful when you have more than a second's warning that you need to use it. unless you ring it all the time.
Which is most of the time, IME. A well-timed 'ting' of the bell is a very useful preventative measure. I use mine a lot in London, and mainly in a gentle "hey, look over here in case you haven't seen me" kind of way.

I think this whole debate is missing the point, pedetrians are not the problem, it is a case that there is still no clear segregated cycle network even in London.

There is almost no conflict between cyclists and pedestrians in Holland, and this in a place where cycle lanes and pavements are often shared spaces in rural areas. (Of course in England we hardly even bother to build pavements in rural areas).

When cyclists become 30% of the traffic, pedestrians will know to expect cyclists and each will be considerate of the other.

In the meantime while we wait for the government to spend more on cycle facilities than on cars, and introduce absolute priority to pedestrians, then second priority to bicycles in urban areas, and make cars wait for the more important traffic to pass, even at major roundabouts, we have to be tolerant of each other.

We should always be intolerant of cars though. Its funny how people tend to shout and complain about a cyclist riding on the pavement, or jumping a red light, but seem to accept crimes like illegally parked cars. We need many more traffic wardens and much higher parking fines.

the worst accidents happen too fast for those kind of reactions.

exactly when you are likely to be taken unawares. realise that when you are mindful of one obvious danger you are more likely to miss a different one- think swerving to avoid a ped and being hit from behind by a motorbike, or getting your wheel caught in a poorly placed drain. be careful out there :)

I hurt my arse today because a stupid kid playing football running backwards almost hit me. I managed to avoid him by stopping very quickly but the momentum made the saddle hit my arse. I didn't shout at him though.

Dear Cyclists,

Running red lights at a pedestrian crossing outside a primary school at 8.50am on a weekday is not ok. However, every day as I cross a least three or four of you do so, almost hitting children, and so far only one of you has ever stopped to apologise. I am going to start sticking things in your wheels as you go by :)

Hope you get hit by taxis,

Thora

Very clever

Why don't you do one for all the other types of road users too, while you're at it?

Twat.

Cos, it's only cyclists that try to kill me and the kids every morning?
So start a seperate thread then.

Fucking car drivers 'try and kill me' every day but I dont go hi-jacking every car thread with anti car driver rants, so why is it that whenever a thread gets started by a cyclist on here, someone has to hi-jack it with an anti-cyclist rant? it's not the people on this thread 'trying to kill you and your kids' so why hi-jack this thread about it?

Same as every thread about vegetarian food seems to get hijacked by some twat who needs to bleat that vegetarian food is crap and that we're evolved to eat meat etc.

and every big brother thread is hijacked by people who feel the need to share their ground-breaking insight that it's "crap".

:)

Lol, this was an anti-pedestrian rant - it's not like I hijacked an "aren't cyclists great" thread. And how do I know there aren't any killer cyclists here? You strike me as the type to ignore red lights btw :hmm:

As a cyclist I agree it's really fucking annoying when pedestrians just walk out, happens all the time in the city. That said I walked into a cyclist the other day :( On a bike path no less. :( Oh the shame.

Don't see why you took offence in the first place Herbsman, Thora's complaint was perfectly valid and wasn't really out of place on the thread.

I can't say I've ever been surprised by a pedestrian ... I guess we're a bit more chilled generally down here in the SW, plus I work in an institution where the first point on the contractors' H&S course is about not making assumptions based on the generally very high levels of education of the other people on the site. ;)
.

Dear People

I see you have a human tendency to see things from your own perspective.

Sometimes you really believe that your own journey, on foot, on cycle and in car is the only one that really matters and other humans should get OUT OF YOUR WAY NOW because you need to get there quicker.

please remember to smile and go slow however you perambulate.

love another human being

As for those atheist vegetarian cyclists, don't they realise that God put Man on the earth to KILL AND/OR EAT WHAT HE LIKES - and the Car is God's Tool in getting us to the McD drive-through with a maximum of incidental death?

Some people. When will they Take The Light Of Jesus Into Their Hearts and start driving fast near schools, eh?

Try reading post 44 again maybe?

The OP clearly wasn't an anti-pedestrian rant at all, it was a moan about pedestrians who cross without looking. So why on earth Thora felt it needed to counter it with some moan about cyclists running red lights is beyond me. I suppose it felt this was a perfect thread for it to try to be clever and stick up for pedestrians against cyclists or something.

Lame.

Lol, I'm a pedestrian and a cyclist, and people who are entirely inconsiderate of others piss me off. Pedestrians who don't look, cyclists who go through red lights at pedestrian crossing. I assume you are so defensive because you are an inconsiderate cyclist Herbsman

I just read it as an appeal for people to be more considerate really

Wheelies, crips in manual chairs, are often as not ignored by every category of traffic. Pedestrians walk backwards into us; runners almost run us down; bicycles, due to our relative lowness, run into us; and, cars generally make life difficult by parking at bus stops and across dropped kerbs.

Woe is me, who has descended to such an ignominious level…
