mike mcc - my experience with members of the armed forces committing assaults on members of the public has been that they lie about it. i brought that up in the context of spring-peeper's perverse and apparently unreserved support for the armed forces. as for committing crimes, i was thinking more along the lines of this http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/jul/13/baha-mousa-inquiry-opens. of course, you don't have to send the armed forces abroad for them to commit serious crimes, as the nationalist population of the six counties has found out on numerous occasions.

I'm not going to even try and defend those who killed Baha Mousa. It was a vile crime for which they should have been done for. Though you did specifically mention this country. Nor will I deny that there were crimes coming by forces personnel (and security services) in Ulster. The military are representative of the UK population and put in situations of higher stress than most. my contention is that there are plenty of civvies in this country who are equally violent. If we're going to mention Ulster you can look at the idea of punishment beatings and killings.
