Dead chicken TV

The way people are reacting to the programmes is just another example of how killing animals for food has become such an abstract part of the whole process. I eat meat but am prepared to kill and have killed what I have eaten, I think if you're not prepared to kill or accept that someone has to kill for you then you shouldn't eat meat.

Hmm if you thought that was bad you should've seen a programme on bbc 3 this week, where they actually killed live lambs(very young to which many ppl had an issue with) and showed the whole process infront of a live audience, i couldsurprisingly watch most of it, quite hard though, the previous day they were killing goats..

that's ridiculous. how the hell do you expect me to go find and kill an animal for my food. just rustle a cow from the nearby farmers field one evening? he'd shoot me in the face!

i saw the veal one. i'd never heard of that programme before (kill it, cook it, eat it). it was the most surreal thing i've ever seen on tv - wasn't well handled as well as as i understand it, the animals aren't meant to see their dead compadres prior to being stunned as it upsets them.

Saw some of that before Trippy. Was it a repeat or the second series of it?
That's the one wishface. Was on before. I tried to watch some but only managed one, the cows and that upset me for days so didn't tune in again but it was all over the news so I knew which animal it was every week.

Why has it upset you so much?
Are you a veggie?

If that was directed at me I did say:

I think if you're not prepared to kill or accept that someone has to kill for you then you shouldn't eat meat.

;)

Just to clarify I have spent about 10 years as a vegan before, which only changed with time spent in a country where any food was welcome which served to change my priorities somewhat, I dont overdo the meat-eating bit though and keep to an "everything in moderation" philosophy.

sometimes yes, though it's not been me that's brought it since i can remember, so i couldn't tell you if it was free range or not. the last chicken product i broought was probably some birds eye chicken dippers or something like that (which probably contains 0% chicken anyway).

i buy what i can afford. if free range products that i want are cheap enough then thats what i buy. if not then i can't. im not entirely sure what else i can do. its ok for the likes of jamie oliver to preach these ideas, but he can afford it.

What you can do (if you really care) is not buy chicken at all. You don't need it to survive so if the animal welfare issues bother you as much as you claim yet you can't afford to buy the more ethical option then don't buy it at all. Buy some lentils instead, much cheaper.

please dont tell me that i don't care when i've already said a couple of times that i generally support the idea. I'm not the one pricing the products.

But you are the one buying them ( even if it's only occasionally)

Surely if people really cared and couldn't afford the ethical alternative they just wouldn't buy it at all? I really really don't understand the 'can't afford it' argument.

 I do. It's quite simple. If you're on a budget and you have a choice between spending £3 and spending £10, you spend £3.

Is eating chicken compulsory?

It is to some - fine if you want to be sanctimonious about it, but I don't think you should judge people until they're educated better about their choices.

I'm not being sanctimonious - I'm pointing out flaws in the 'I care deeply but I can't afford it' bollocks.

Call it education if you like :)

Cos a lot of people see it as the cheapest way to feed their families - they don't see veggie dishes as an option

So they don't actually care about the animal welfare issues as much as they claim to.

There's hardly a shortage of food education right now. Most people who claim not to be able to afford an alternative are just like that twat Hayley, just using it as an excuse.

I disagree - there's been a programme on the telly that 3.6 million people watched - that's all

Yeah, about one issue. Howver, there's the whole school dinners campaign, the govt push against obesity, food labelled to the nth degree. I'm not just talking about this one issue, I'm talking about food in general.

I think you're being obtuse :p
