I've got jump leads and can nip over this evening (but I need to be back by 8.15) if that's any good to you :)

Oh, that's a good idea if you're up for it!

We get home around 4:30...

YEAH I know I just wanted to bring another possibilty to the fray just in case. It could be just more than one thing
it could be but it most case's it's best to look at the cheap to fix problem first rather than the dismantleing the engine verison innit :)

NOOOOooooo dismantling the engine is fun.

You should see fizzers face when she comes home and finds a stripped 34 PICT carb in the kitchen and a semi complete 1600 twinport beetle engine in the front room on a sheet so that it dont feck up the carpet

My only defence is that its cold. . .bloody cold out there :D

I soooo need a shed or garage :D

i dream of a garage a garden and a garage fuck shed's the'z too small... although the idea of having a mini lab in a shed appeals in a mad professor type way...

My dad had two 1930s motorbikes in bits in our living room for nearly a year when I was a kid. ISTR it started out with it being 'too cold to work in the garage' too :)

its the battery, cold weather makes shagged ones pack up, i dare say the alternators on its way out too and that its been shagging the battery, dirty bastard, if ya get it running take it to a garage or auto electrician, 5mins with a multimeter and youll know if the alternators fucked

Your not into de-loreans are you ?
back in the day there were two fo them at one poitn sitting on the old mans drive which now live in the coventry motor museum i used to play mechanics taking the pop off panels on and off ... eee them were the days....

but no it has more to do with a fast back looking roof chopped morris minor with a v8 and 5 speed with disc brakes.... but i need some time and space...

Get some jumpleads and push the car into the road blocking the traffic, up with the bonnet and ask the first car for a jump.:D

Nice I'm working on the beetle at the mo, Just changed the air filter today which was no major biggy but has to be done as tomorrow its refit a new choke unit, reset the carbs (as they're running shit and hence why the choke unit has to be replaced). . .Well at least I hope it is. (If its not its a complete carb strip and rebuild job )

And the joy of putting in new pushrod tubes. The seals gone in a couple of them and as its a take the engine out and remove the cyclinder heads each time job I'm doing all of them in one hit. Also gotta fit a new v belt and pulley wheel.

All on the side of the road.

Ah the joys of cold freezing tarmac on the back :D

Makes ya wee a bit :D

surely what you need to do is getting rounnnign and then get a second engine... build that up on the kitchen table and when it's readdy undo the retainer bolts suspension and jack the body up roll the old on out and roll the new one in :D

Haven't had time to look at it yet, yesterday my son twisted his ankle after school, today it was already dark when we got home and I didn't have a torch (was going to check out the fuse box)...

tomorrow it is then! :)

Happy ending, the car has been resurrected

Everyone who said it was the battery gets points!!!!

Just went and bought a new battery after realising my battery was actually 5 years old  (I thought it was only a couple of years old), and the car is alive again.

woohoo!

Oh my god I completely forgot :o I'm so sorry - I got stuck at work till after 6 and the tube was all crowded and horrid and I got distressed. What a shite mate :(

Glad it's all working again though and it was only the battery :)

Don't be silly! Hope you're less distressed now! ;)

I didn't really need the car until today so it's all good and now it has a new battery which is even better (even if a little expensive) - I don't think the car will last much longer though, think I'll keep it for another year and then scrap it, because the bonnet is getting seriously rusty and crumbly :( :( It's only 11 years old!

p.s. thanks to the kind people who offered to help!

Good news. :) Five years is about right to change it.

Do make sure the new one is charging properly though - the old one going flat might have been a symptom of a failing alternator.

Oh, and check out your local scrapyards - you may be able to find a replacement bonnet for a few quid. It would be daft to scrap the car just because of that.

Ooooooh yeah man. Its fun and frustrating all at the same time.

She's had new fuels line and I've given her a damn good service, oil, plugs, leads, oil strainer, belt, generator pulley, air filter, and the battery gave up a week or too agao so I've got a new one of those on and now found that the starter motor sticks so a replacement starter motor is on the cards.

And we've been trying everything we could to get that tick over sorted on the carb from cold. Got her to idle ok now with a new choke unit. BUT we just cant get the carb set up right. Tick over on the choke is now fine but she's a bit spluttery under acceleration from low revs.

Soooooo its check the points gap and timing, check for any splits in the vac hoses air etc and set the carb back to scratch and try again.

Then its onto the pushrod tubes as a couple of the seals have gone. Got some nice empi allu adjustables to go in.

Its all fun but I have found my hell. It comes in the shape of a carb and has 34 PICt written on it.

Once this is sorted its onto the body work :D

I'm not a mechanic I just had a lot of experinece being skint and had bangers/old cars. Necessity and all that. Its great fun, saves a packet and it give you a wicked sense of achievement.

Like Garf said just get some practice.

Arm yourself with a set of screwdrivers spanners and a manual. Then you toi can have the joy of getting dirt out from under your fingernails and grazed knuckles :D

Briiliant news and great that its the simple option :)

get the alternator checked, the car could work for a couple of weeks and appear to be fine but the alternator could be damaging your battery all the time, it explains how to check it in the haynes manual but you need a multimeter, if you have one it takes about 5 mins, they cost about £10-£20, most half decent mechanics should have one
