De la Hoya v PacMan thread

I normally like him. And he was a great boxer although these days he's merely a very good one. But I really can't give him much credit for what appears to be a midget wrestling world tour, with Hatton being lined up after Pacquiao. Not only is a guy his size picking on guys who are much smaller an embarrassment for all concerned, it's also getting in the way of legitimate, meaningful contests at the lower weights.

The fight out there was Margarito, but apparently he wasn't going to fight a Mexican. If not Margarito, then why not Cotto?

I guess, the lure of the pfp is massive.

There is logic behind the decision, so no real qualms from me.

When you get to that level, these are the only fights to have.

I don't regard Hatton vs De La Hoya as a mismatch.

DLH started out as a super Featherweight IIRC

DLH would be favourite though. My money would certainly be on DLH.

Hatton nearly got kfto by powder puff punchers in the Welterweight division.

He wouldn't be able to take the power of DLH's punches.

shit I forgot this was on - manny was brutal against diaz - I suspect de la hoya will win but I'd like pacquiao to take it simply because it would be a great fight to wtach if he did

what channels it on? Doubt I'll stay up to watch live but will download sunday...

Sly box office.

A week on Sunday morning.

Are you serious?

Hatton had serious problems moving up to 147 to fight men who are a lot smaller than De La Hoya, who remember not so long ago was fighting the likes of Sturm and Hopkins. He's even shorter than Pacquiao (although at least his frame will be a bit bigger) and the difference in reach will be gigantic.

Hatton will spend the night eating jabs until he gets inside and will then find that he's unable to hurt De La Hoya and can't take the power of a much, much bigger man. That fight has embarrassing mismatch printed all over its forehead. You might as well put Hatton in with Joe Calzaghe or David Haye. He is completely the wrong size for the fight. The only way that Hatton is in with the slightest prayer against De La Hoya is if Oscar turns elderly overnight. Even then I think he loses badly.

If Oscar really wants to move down to welterweight he should be fighting men who belong at that weight and are comfortable at it, like Margarito or Cotto. If Pacquioa and Hatton want a "superfight" they should be fighting each other. You know, competitive fights between people who are at least vaguely the same fucking size as each other.

The money that De La Hoya brings is fucking up the top level of a whole number of mid to lower weight classes because everybody just wants the big payday. So most of them aren't fighting each other, because that might put them out of the running for the lottery win that a De La Hoya "superfight" amounts to. Instead they are all looking for a completely meaningless fight with Oscar.

you are joking right!

comparing Hatton fighting DLH
to Hatton fighting David Haye?

I didn't say Hatton'd win

but it's no mismatch

no more then Hatton v Mayweather

Hatton had serious problems moving up to 147 to fight men

I don't regard winning the WBA welterweight title or losing to one of if not the best P4P boxer of all time as having problems.

Don't be under the illusion that Hatton can't fight at 147 just coz you read it in a newspaper article.

lol :D

You seriously think that Hatton is a threat at 147lbs?

No I think that Hatton vs De La Hoya is not a mismatch.

But to answer your question, It depends on what you mean by a threat?

I think if hatton went up to welterweight full time he'd hold his own, be in the top 5 or so, win and lose a belt or two.

A threat being top 5 - maybe even top 10!

Hatton fought Luis Collazo and was very very lucky to get a win on points.

Collazo is ranked no9 in the welterweight division. Collazo nearly knocked Ricky out in the last round.

Hatton fought Floyd at 145lbs. His one and only trek into the Welterweight division was v Collazo.

Hatton v Cotto/Williams/Margarito/Cintron/Mosely - well, I know who my money would be on in all of those fights.

Cintron may be a muppet (as Numbers says), but if he hit Hatton, there'd only be one thing happening.

Margarito would eat Hatton alive. Cotto v Hatton, doesn't bear thinking about. Williams? I'd give Hatton no chance...

There's a very good reason why Hatton is not in the Welterweight division. Watch the fights with Floyd and Collazo and you'll soon get it.

Hatton is nothing at 147. Fact

DLH v PacMan technically is a joke, an absolute joke. But this is boxing so who knows..

imo.

Yes I'm joking, but the joke works because there is a kernel of truth in it. Hatton has no business fighting top level fighters at 147. He is not big enough. That's against "normal" sized 147 fighters. De La Hoya has been fighting at 160 recently and against top level 160lbers too. He is much, much too big for Hatton.

There is nothing that Hatton can do to De La Hoya. De La Hoya is used to taking punches from middleweights and Jr Middleweights. Hatton isn't even big for a junior welterweight. It is a mismatch and I for one have no interest in watching a big man paste a little man.

Did you actually see the Collazo fight?

Luis Collazo is no Oscar De La Hoya. He's less talented than Oscar and he's considerably smaller. Hatton was very lucky indeed to get the win. At 140 Hatton would make mincemeat of a Junior Welterweight equivalent of Collazo. At 147 he struggled badly. In his one other fight at 147 he took a bit of a beating and got knocked out, although I don't think that tells us much because Floyd would beat him at any weight (and it's worth noting that Floyd was very small for a Welterweight too).

What it comes down to is that Hatton isn't a big Jr Welterweight. When he moves up to Welterweight he is generally going to be fighting guys who are considerably bigger than him and in Oscar's case hugely so. He would still be competitive in the outer reaches of the top 10 at that weight division but he just has too many physical disadvantages to seriously worry the top guys. They all without exception have a big height and reach advantage, meaning that they can slaughter him at range and when he gets inside he can be outmuscled by guys with bigger frames and fighting weights. Plus he's getting hit harder and hitting guys who won't be nearly as impressed by his power.

And that's against natural welterweights. Oscar is a guy who is moving down from fights against Sturm and Hopkins.

yeah nearly

but didn't!

145lbs is welterweight!

dur!!

I know you knob.

My point is that he was 2lbs shy of the welterweight limit. Speaks volumes (to those who have a basic understanding about boxing). - so not you.

Anyway, isn't this the point when you talk shite about Amir Khan't.

lol ;)

no need to call me knob

or is the only way you can have a debate is to include personal insults?

niiiiiice!

The late rounds were like watching Muhammad Ali against Larry Holmes or Sugar Ray Leonard against Terry Norris. The only weapon left in Roy’s arsenal was his heart. “I thought of stopping it,” Merkerson said later. “But in a fight of this magnitude, that’s hard to do and Roy wanted to keep fighting.”
Stunning commentary.
