david irving to get 10 years?

Irving quoted from BBC article said:
"History is a constantly growing tree - the more you know, the more documents become available, the more you learn, and I have learned a lot since 1989."
Was no history book made available to him?

I can't help but to think that this whole process, from his arrest on the autobahn to today, has been to gain publicity for his rejected theories. Will he be left to rot in gaol, I doubt it.

I'm happy to see him rot in gaol (for the full three would be nice)
I don't care when he made these remarks he is trying to alter a terrible history that has the potential to allow the far right wing room to manouver.

What happened in germany and what is happening today in many parts of the world is being taken by the extreme ends of political parties and being twisted for their own use.

The thing that we need to learn is that all these people are as bad as each other and we need to take take that none of them are in a position if power.

We see here on this forum thet the nasty jews are doing this that and the other to the palestinians with no mention of what the terrorists are doing to israel. The same, I'm sure, is true in reverse.

Can't we all be friends and not try to kill each other. - please

so much for freedom of speech, quite extraordinary really.
I don't think anyone has claimed that there are no restrictions on freedom of speech in Austria (or elsewhere, for that matter).

I'm not convinced that it is right or wise of Austria (and Germany) to outlaw Holocaust denial, but I have no sympathy for Irving. He is a pro-Nazi liar who was exposed in court in London when he sued a historian for calling him a Holocaust denier. He also knew perfectly well, when he made Holocaust-denying speeches in Austria, that he was breaking the law and risked prosecution and imprisonment.

He knew there was a warrant for his arrest in Austria, so the question is why did he go there?

Publicity? Martyrdom? Did he assume the Austrian authorities wouldn't touch him? Apparently, he announced last week that he had booked a first class ticket home for today, the day of his sentence.

He lawyers will appeal and more than likely Irving's three year sentence will be reduced.

After all this, does Irving still see himself as a figurehead for the far-right in Europe and will these events enhance his stature amongst them?

I shouldn't think that Holocaust deniers admire him as much as they once did. He has recanted.

Recanted? His website newsletter for today gives this little gem.

What kind of truth is so weak that it must imprison reasoning skeptics who dare to question it?

Would only apply if they'd imprisoned a "reasoning skeptic", Mr.Irving, not a professional humbuggerer and hired apologist for fascism such as yourself.

I don't think that sympathy with the individual is the issue.

It's simply barbarous and primitive to sentence someone to three years in jail for disagreeing with a fact. He's wrong, but in a civilized society, he should be perfectly entitled to be wrong.

I don't agree either with Christians who believe in the absurdities of the Genesis creation myth, but I'm quite certain that they shouldn't be jailed. And they're much more dangerous than a failed fuhrer.

exactly.

This sentence is for something he said (a) 17 years ago, and (b) (claims to) no longer believe anyway . . .

Jesus, on that basis, prisons everywhere would be full if the law extended beyond one very particular offence, that offence itself born of that nation's collective 'sensitivity' about its own role as a joint partner in the Third Reich.

17 years ago . . . that's fucked up.

It is not illegal to believe the holocaust never happened. It is illegal to publicly declare that the holocaust never happened.

Having grown up in Germany, I can understand the reasons why these laws exist - but beyond what I said in Post #9, it is hard to sum up in just a few sentences.

Agreed.
