David Cronenburg's best film

Hmm, tricky. I generally like the later stuff better than the earlier, but that's probably going out on a limb amongst most Cronenberg fans. Thought Crash was brilliant (inevitable given that I like J.G. Ballard loads as well and thought there was a good synergy between the two), was initially disappointed with eXistenZ despite it being one of the only films I really seriously couldn't wait to see in the cinema, but on later watchings came to think it was pretty brilliant too.

Ultimately though it's gotta be Naked Lunch.

I'll go for 'Dead Ringers'. I have 'Crash' and although i liked the idea of it i thought it was a bit crap

VIDEODROME clearly.

Scanners is superb, but Videodrome is sublime. Quite like Cronenbergs recent offerings also, even though they're not the same style as his early work.

Sacnners has Michael Ironside. Your arguement is invalid

Videodrome has James Woods who has been immortalised in the Simpsons, hence my argument is clearly more valid than yours.

The Fly

"I'm saying... I'm saying I'm an insect who dreamt he was a man and loved it. But now the dream is over... and the insect is awake...I'm saying... I'll hurt you if you stay"

oh, I forgotten about 'The Fly', that's a superb film. I love it when Jeff Goldblum opens his wardrobe and reveals its contents - I've always wanted to have a wardrobe with just the one outfit that encapsulated my personality and never have to worry about what to wear ever again :D

The Fly probably - The Dead Zone is ace too.
Has anyone seen M Butterfly?
I thought existenz is his worst film, or maybe Eastern Promises

There's a similar scene in 9 and 1/2 Weeks with Mickey Rourke's wardrobe

Another vote for Dead Ringers, Jeremy Irons playing both of the twins was a superb acting achievement. The slow descent into drug addiction and madness with the crazy gynaecological surgical instruments

For me it's between Naked Lunch and Dead Ringers. I first saw Dead Ringers on TV, very late at night. I found myself compelled to sit up and watch it to the end, in a mix of fascination and horror/disgust. Watching it felt sordidly voyeuristic, and the feelings evoked by the film stayed with me for quite some time afterwards, I don't think I slept well for a few nights! But that surely is the mark of a good film?

WTF? What's wrong with me?

I still like the Thing though.
Cronenberg / Carpenter. I thought exactly the same thing mate! :D
Then double-teked when I saw the fillums people were nominating :o

Another vote for Dead Ringers. It's absolutely fantastic and I'll never watch it again.

watched The Brood last night.

fuckin' hell...what a grim, creepy and depressing film.

recommend though!

i love how oliver reed speaks. "whatdoyoumean NO? whatdoyoumeanwhen yousay NO?"

and the mad woman "but you didn't protect me daddy, you didn't!!"

it's pretty fucked up.

yeah it was.
and in the first scene - where he makes the bearded man into a little girl.

i don't think i'll ever want to watch The Brood again.

...hope they do a remake though!
original story - scif and horror mixed into one.

Dead Ringers for me. Superb central performance(s) by Mr Irons, and a compelling and technically accomplished film too.

I might have to revisit eXistenZ, it just seemed like he had totally lost the plot (literally and figuratively) at that point. But so many people seem to rate it, I'm willing to give it a go. But hats off to a pioneering director who everybody seems to get something from.

ETA: I would love to see a poll on this.
