Dave Berman/Purple Mountains/Silver Jews/D.C. Berman

I'm an excellent driver
He's back with a new album and its fantastic. You can keep your Dylan, Morrissey and Cohen- for my money Berman is the best lyricist of all time.

His new name is Purple Mountains, with an album of the same name.

Dave has put himself through the mill with crack addiction and a suicide attempt.

The lyrics of the opening track seem to explore his dark mind

Purple Mountains: Purple Mountains review – sardonic Americana with the lyrics of the year

Purple Mountains is a devastatingly honest masterpiece from David Berman

That's Just the Way I Feel

[Verse 1]
Well, I don't like talkin’ to myself
But someone's gotta say it, hell
I mean, things have not been going well
This time I think I finally fucked myself
You see, the life I live is sickening
I spent a decade playing chicken with oblivion
Day to day, I'm neck and neck with giving in
I’m the same old wreck I've always been

[Chorus]
And when I see her in the park
It barely merits a remark
How we stand the standard distance
Distant strangers stand apart

[Verse 2]
Course I've been humbled by the void
Much of my faith has been destroyed
I've been forced to watch my foes enjoy
Ceaseless feasts of schadenfreude
And as the pace of life keeps quickening
Beneath the bitching and the bickering
When I try to drown my thoughts in gin
I find my worst ideas know how to swim

[Chorus]
Well, a setback can be a setup
For a comeback if you don't let up
But this kind of hurtin' won't heal
And the end of all wanting
Is all I've been wanting
And that’s just the way that I feel

[Verse 3]
I met failure in Australia
I fell ill in Illinois
I nearly lost my genitalia
To an anthill in Des Moines
I was so far gone in Fargo
South Dakota got annoyed
That’s the shit I'm talkin’ 'bout
When I talk to you about
Ceaseless feasts of schadenfreude

[Chorus]
And a setback can be a setup
For a comeback if you don't let up
But this kind of hurtin' won’t heal
And the end of all wanting
Is all I've been wanting
The end of all wanting
Is all I've been wanting
The end of all wanting
Is all I've been wanting
And that's just the way that I feel

Been listening to this a lot at the moment. Wasn't so sure about it at first but now really enjoying it. While there are continuities with Silver Jews it does have quite a different feel.

Interest piqued despite never having heard any of the acts in the thread title

Oh you definitely need to check out the Silver Jews. I'd probably start with their final album Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea and American Water

I've little frame of reference for it from what I've read just now, only perhaps (I imagine) Magnetic Fields, Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs, and one review of Purple Mountains nanechecks Pavement's Range Life

Silver Jews was formed with Malkmus and Nastanovich from Pavement, and while it was a Berman project they cropped up on a number of albums.

I read he didnt really like touring or playing live, and this was just before he started his tour.
Maybe the pressure got to him. Poor old Dave

Well isn't that just the shittest news to wake up to. After all those years away since splitting Silver Jews, he comes back with a brilliant new album, totally out the blue, with a new tour coming up... and now this. Fifty fucking two. It doesn't get much sadder than this.

Very sad to hear this. Also very poignant to read the lyrics posted above after the horrible news. RIP Dave.

Never heard of him until the new album popped up in the 'recommended' thread, but I really liked it. So this is only the second time I've heard his name. :(

I'd vaguely heard of Silver Jews as one of those bands people in bands like, but only bothered to listen to them for the first time last week after this thread was bumped. So more or less the same. (I liked them fwiw)
