Dangerous places....

I'm sorry, but P and 24th, dangerous? That neighborhood is all college students, single gay men, and old ladies. So unless you're scared of one of those three groups, you would have been ok. Someone guessed that you were an easily-spooked tourist and was having a laugh at your expense.

DC has some dangerous sections, but it is highly unlikely that as a tourist you would ever come anywhere remotely close to any of these spots.

Zoltan, what were you doing in Transdniestra? That's way more dangerous than the other places you mention...

Me:
1. Iraq
2. Afghanistan
3. Pakistan

Pakistan??

I've heard nothing but great stories coming from there from guys. The people are meant to be warm and welcoming. Not so sure if your a woman.

I know ....I couldnt remeber the exact area..
"Was once warned by a garage attendant on P & 24 th ( or something ...."

DC is the only place in the world where someone has tried to rob me in the street.

Not Moscow.

Not Mexico City.

Not Guatemalan shanty towns.

Not even Moss Side.

DC.

DC was well dodgy in the small hours of the morning. :(

Dont wander about Kiev or St Petersburg in the early hours, pissed with a 6 ft local blonde girl on yer arm unless you want to attract SERIOUS attention from the criminally underpaid & bored local peelers.... I have been mugged by the filth in these places, but done with such expertise that They left me with all my Roubles, but yook my USD & EUR & I was hardly aware I had been done..... :(

Heh... in certain African countries (Guinee-Conakry, for example), it's not the criminals you need to be scared of... it's the police...

Certain African countries?

Pretty much every country in the world more like...

I haven't really been to any dangerous places in comparison to some on this thread, but I have certainly had a few hairy moments in Tunis, Sofia, Amsterdam and Carlisle (seriously!).

Seconded!

Paid bribes/robbed - depends on how you look at it.. all over Indonesia and in Egypt.

Most worrying city has to be Nairobi.

I`ve also been mugged in the USA....

Not in South Bronx, Harlem, D.C or L.A but in San Antonio, Texas (got a real first hand idea what the Alamo must have been like!) and Sante-Fe, New Mexico!!

I thought Naples was pretty scary too, but then I'm a wus :)

Naples is great kind of "South London sur Med.." attitude.

Aldershite on a friday or Saturday night, now that is terrifying..

Where do I claim my prize?

IM sorry, Although you have a rather commendable high score, I may well be planning a one off trip involving Nagorno karabach, Ossetia & Dagestan this summer.
Can we hold back the awards ceremony until i return ? ( or not as the case may be)

Can I ask a question...
Why..??

And how does one go about getting in & out of those kind of places..??

easy- theres a regular train from Moscow to baku, whith the opportunity to get on & off along the way for small diversions- 60 hours direct of you are up to it.

Why? Cant answer that really, but its a buzz going to to out of the way places with that frission or risk - but I draw the line at a long stay in either Algiers or Gronzy.

After 150,000 dead in the past 10 years, its still a bit of a no no for the freelance traveller, especially one who sti9cks out like a sore thumb & wants to wander the streets exploring less well travelled places :(

I know the days of pick up trucks crusing the streets with barking mad islamic fundamentalists at the wheels , with Guillotines in the back are probabaly over, but its not a place to be outside after dark still

A few days after I went from Ley to Manarli the road got shelled by the Pakistanies. My mate had to back via Kashmere.

I'm thinking of going to Cambodia later on this year......it's not considered dangerous as far as I am aware?

Not been, but from what've I've heard and read

If the bus stops, don't go wondering of in the bush for the loo if you like having legs.

There are shootings in some clubs, check the ex pat pages for the dodgy ones.

Road are more dangerous (althogh that applies to most of asia)

Weed is really cheap

cool - I've heard about the land mine situation - bit of common sense should see me alright with that one.

I hadn't heard about the shootings in clubs - I'll look into it - thanks...

Try paying a visit to lovely Oxford, even though it's home to two of the country's most deprived estates! :O

1. Rose Hill (anti-social behaviour, arson, burglaries, car crime, drugs, fights, joyriding, robberies, shootings, stabbings, the list is endless!)
2. Blackbird Leys (crackhouses and joyriding)
3. Barton (burglaries and damage to cars)

These are about the only places on this thread that i've been to! I wouldn't say they are on the same scale as people who have been to Iraq or Afghanistan etc. Mind you I've only been in the daytime!

I lived in Rose Hill for a couple of years, and had mates on sound systems from Blackbird Leys, it was OK. Less rough than other places I've lived, like Broom Hall in Sheffield where they caught the Ripper some years earlier or Loughborough Junction where I've been the last 10 years.

I'd go for:

1. Kingston, Jamaica, 1998. Most notably the bus terminal but most places the wrong side of Halfway Tree after dark.
2. Venice/Compton/South Central, Los Angeles, 1988.

Nothing else comes close to those two for actual in your face "Oh shit I'm going to die right now".
