Masters at Work - Back Fired ft. India, Joey Negro Mix

Makes me weak at the knees :D

Only house tune that I will admit to loving

pity he's not really made anything good ever since . . .

Well, the Tricknology release "Groove" which sampled Earth Wind and Fire was damn good I thought. If you can wait an hour for the hook to briefly appear that is!!

Yep...I see what you're saying. I just love that Earth Wind and Fire sample.

I'm having a real problem finding much decent new dance music at the moment (I could look harder I guess) to be honest.

All this minimal loving has gone too far and I blame cocaine.

I can't imagine dancing a whole night listening to minimal techno... it's good upbeat after-hours music but never seems to have enough of a kick to make me move.

I've heard a lot of minimal which isn't that much different to downtempo psytrance – it has the same spacey feeling, same tempo, just with better sleeve designs.

i keep thinking of robert hood when people talk of 'minimal'.

i'm wrong to do so, aren't i? :(

Nah, Robert Hood is real minimal techno...Not this trendy bollocks that's around at the moment.

I'd say almost everything I seem to hear these days is pretty minimal or has an element of it.

At the right time it can be great (like Magda at Fabric!!), however, it does my nut in hearing it all night long. Then going to an after hours club for more of the same.

Killer B......I don't think you're misguided.

Freq Nasty's remix of Rage Against The Machine Killing in the name of... done as Geek fasty or something... either blows the roof off or clears the room, one of the 2, no inbetween:)

Geek Ghastly

His remix of Alter Ego's 'Rocker' under this guise is a rather good crowd mover too :D

Saw him play out a few months ago at Herbal and he played a brilliant (and I'm guessing by him) remix of 'Ghost Town' ...! Can't wait to get my hands on that one!

hell yeah, i know - but he's not what people are describing when they say 'minimal' is he?

being out in the sticks as i am, i've yet to hear this newfangled minimal stuff. can't say i'm seeking it out too hard... :D

I wouldn't worry, your not missing much, most of it sounds like paint drying. :D

I did have a look around the internet to find out what this 'minimal' stuff is all about - I'm always interested in new variations on techno.

Is it that stuff on Kompakt that is just a kick drum and a few cliks and whirrs? Do people listen to that all night ? Or is there more to it than that?

That Carl Craig mix of Falling Up is pretty minimal and that's fucking amazing. Or is that more like 'proper' minimal techno?

I'm confused  :)

Racing Green - High Contrast
Bigger Better Deal - Desert Eagle Discs (the mix with Rodney P on it)
Know My Name - Nightmares On Wax (Paul Nice Mix)

have always worked for me. ymmv :)

Best party breaks record I've bought lately was Sukdat on Finger Lickin.

Can't remember the artist though.

WORD! 'Sudkat' is a killer track for sure

It's by Soul Of Man and the Rogue Element remix is a blinder too. And pink vinyl!
It's a whole party in 1 record....

Same said India singing on "Love & Happiness" by, I think River Ocean (probably a pseudenym for MAW!) - much sampled by DnB producers. Killer.

MAW have at least a couple sure fire killers - not least JOcelyn BRown's vocalled (its alright) I feel it. ROni SIze remix aint too bad

I guess you've got minimal techno (yep, stuff like Kompakt) and then techno which is minimal. Some early acid tracks are minimal in structure but pack a lot more punch than some Shoreditch gak anthem.

Possibly, but where have the basslines gone? I don't like downtempo tedious funk-sampling plodstep.

Scratch Perverts - Stand By [Krafty Kuts remix] might be up your street, but I only mention it cos it's a decentish krafty kuts effort there's far better breaks tunes out there.... see below!

here's a few that do it for me

"I wish - Skee lo (aquaski mix)" - Obviously the original is the best, but this one will get people going mental on the dancefloor.

"King of Rock - Run DMC (le rouge elephant mix)" another massive tune for me...

"Space invaders are smoking grass - IF" all time favourite electro tune

"Beat Dis - bomb the bass" always raises a smile

Yeah, I used to know what minimal was - I've spent quite a few nights getting down to Rob Hood.

It's this new 'minimal' stuff that confuses me. People always point to Kompakt, but they put out quite a range of stuff. There's that boring plodding shit that does nothing, but there's also stuff like Rex the Dog (which I would call electro-house), Justus Kohncke (weird funky stuff) and Aril Brikha (who has put detroit-style techno out on Derrick May's Transmat label). Is this all counted as 'minimal' or is it specifically the paint drying stuff?

Sorry if I'm being dense. And sorry for the derail :)

I've been listening to "similar tracks to Magda" on Last FM, trying to give minmal a chance...

Dominik Eulberg – Keine Nieten Bei Den Herbstzei
AME – Rej
Richie Hawtin – Minimal Master
Konrad Black – White Cigarettes
Matt John – Ferro Sanol Duodenal
Loco Dice – City Lights

I can't take it any more :(

i suspect quite a few artists who've been making music for ages (hawtin, brikha and the like) will be lumped in with the modern minimal stuff 'cause it mixes easily with it... boundaries, as ever, are easy to shift.

dunno why i've not been much interested in finding out what it's like... skim's experience doesn't much encourage me though. :D

Anyway - back to the topic of the thread...

Boring answer: there are no sure-fire floor fillers; it all depends on where you're playing, who you're playing to and when you play it. Tracks that'll slay one dancefloor will clear another.

Less boring answer:

Zero B - Lock Up
Musique - Keep on Jumpin'
!!! - Me and Giuliani Down By the Schoolyard

and just for Killer B: The Source feat Candy Staton - You got the love :p
