I've just seen some of the tributes to him. As well as his political significance as a black footballer - and being pretty bloody good - the fact that he was a class act really shines out. RIP. :(

Absolute legend here in the west midlands, only major team he never played for was Birmingham City.

Very sad news here and probably be the headline news for local news.

    Good bloke, good player.
I sat next to him at a West Brom V Palace match many years ago. The poor bugger was constantly pestered by
kids asking for autographs. Not only did he not turn one away, he found time for a chat with quite a few of them.

He was the reason I argued aged about 9 for about a week that it was perfectly fine to support West Brom AS WELL as Liverpool. Terrific striker and seemed an even better chap.

Great cover. The article itself "The Human Face of Football" less so (its very dated and cheesy) and features Laurie Cunningham rather than Cyrille.
    Heres a link anyway

On Yahoo news from Andrew Murray of FourFourTwo - interview on Ask a Silly Question to Cyrille

Hi Cyrille. How often does some wag shout “Nice one, Cyrille!” at you, and how difficult is it not to punch them?
Hi. That happens all the time. Someone will throw it in there. But you have to respect it – a bit of self-deprecation is always required. The daft thing is, my real name isn’t actually Cyrille – it’s Gilbert. After I was born in French Guiana, my dad sent my cousin over to Cayenne to register my name. By the time he got there after a two-day boat trip, he’d forgotten what they wanted to call me. So he went with Cyrille.

I imagine that after some of the things he had to endure that were shouted at him from the terraces in the 70s and 80s, 'Nice one Cyrille' wouldn't have bothered him one bit - although the song it came from wasn't about him at all, it was about Cyril Knowles of Spurs.

Some of the stick he (and other black players) got back then was fucking horrific, but he just got on with it. Can't have been easy facing that week in week out.

I wonder how many of those present were the same people who hurled shocking abuse at him and his colleagues when they were players? It is a sad irony that no-one has mentioned since the shocking news of his passing. A man correctly considered a Hero now - look at the reaction to his passing by later generations of African footballers - whose mere presence on the pitch resulted in sickening abuse from many when he was a player. Have those responsible simply disappeared into thin air? I wonder.

In any event, he can be heard in his own words here:

I doubt there were any West Brom fans present at the service who would have been responsible for hurling abuse at Mr Regis back in the day. He was an instant success with the Albion faithful and treated with heroic status back then as is now.
