Cyclists never, never, never hurt anyone, Oh No!

I nearly ran into a cyclist on the highway tonight. He was wearing dark clothing and I only saw him at the last second.

No reflective gear whatsoever. Idiot.  :(

Because every proper cyclist has never driven a car, have they?

:D :D

I'm a proper cyclist, I don't drive and I don't know how to drive. Why is that so hard to believe?

I think someone's being prejudiced. :p

I've finally managed to to tell him that he's prejudiced! Turn those tables!

In Holland only about 50% of cyclists bothers with lights at night, nobody wears helmets and many cyclists talk on mobiles. Ahh.. the beauty of riding on car free bicycle lanes, just mind out for the pedestrians.

On the issue of cyclists and pedestrians mixing in peace, it is a question of common sense, idiots will cause problems no matter what vehicle they ride or drive, Strasbourg has excellent pedestrian priority in the middle of town where cyclists ride at about double walking pace and pedestrians know they are about and let them get by when they hear a bell.

There's a nice thing going on in Speke in Liverpool. Reminds me a bit of the Dutch experience but better. The motor vehicles have the roads, but the very wide pavements are seperated into cycling and walking spaces. So there's cycling lanes (both ways) clearly set out in red tarmac and traffic lights that clearly show when both pedestrians and cyclists should cross the busy roads.

I was reminded of this thread today cycling down a very steep hill on the inside of a line of traffic. There's only a narrow gap between the cars and the pavement and there are a couple of roads and driveways where cars can cut out in front of you, so I keep on the brakes and keep my speed under control.

A cyclist directly behind me today couldn't be bothered to wait behind me, went up on the pavement and careered straight down it at full speed.

That really pisses me off. You're either riding on the road or your riding off the road. It's nice to have the option to get off the road and on to a dedicated cycling path when it's available.

To be fair there are loads of traffic-light controlled roadworks round our way at the moment and when the lights are against me I tend to go up on the pavement and continue. But only dead slowly, not full-pelt down a hill!

I justify it for roadworks cos they tend to reduce the traffic to a single narrow lane so you're holding already frustrated motorists up as you travel through the roadworks who are likely to try and squeeze past you too close or too quickly. Better out of it I reckon (oh and roadworks are really annoying ;) )

The Times columnist suggests police should confiscate bikes if the cyclist breaks the law, I completely agree, any road user should have their vehicle confiscated if it infringes on any traffic rule, especially speeding, talking on a mobile, eating or not paying attention when driving, stopping in the advanced stop zone for cyclists at lights, and illegal parking, as suggested in this letter also published in The Times:

An even better idea in the Independent letters..

I'd be happy to stop at lights and not ride on pavements if cars were banned from cities..

It is amazing that after one person dies in an accident with a cyclist, almost every national newspaper has now run two days of features, why don't we have 1500 features on all the pedetrians, and cyclists killed by cars each year?
