Cyclists - Look out for pigs before shooting a red light

Because cyclists shouldn't be made to stop unless it's necessary. It's a waste of energy, a giant pain in the arse and it lengthens your journey time. Shorter journey times for cyclists would encourage more people to get on a bike, which is good for everybody. You also breathe in more fumes when you're stopped at the lights in a queue of traffic.
So does speeding in cars, doesn't make it right though

And the reasons why it should be different for cars are:

- cyclists should be able to get away from the lights before the cars because it's safer for the cyclists. The mad scramble when the lights change causes conflict between cars and bikes.
Doesn't make it safer for pedestrians though, it's OK to say that you would be careful but it would legitimise the arseholes who don't give a toss

- cycling should be encouraged and driving should be discouraged
In the whole I agree provided there are safeguards / deterrents for endangering pedestrians.

See, this is the main reason why I don't redjump. Am I crazy to think that if other road users have a better impression of cyclists, then we'd get more fair treatment? Or am I being hopelessly naive and should just fuck 'em?

For some, possibly. But certainly I think there would be a group of motorists who don't give a fuck. They're the ones that beep or scream at you WHEN YOU'RE DOING ABSOLUTELY FUCK ALL WRONG!

cant see it hurting tbh. will always get some knobheads though who will still drive like a cunt though.

its all about perception innit? if cyclists are perceived to be twats who run red lights endangering little old ladys and their kittens then thats what they are. perception is reality

Complete fucking agreement. I get well pissed off at cyclists who decide the highway code doesn't apply to them, yet get narky at motorists for not treating them as equal road users. If you want equal status as a vehicle, then it works both ways.

It's also the silliness of the argument that a bicycle can ignore laws because it can't do as much harm.
a) It can cause serious injury directly, such as in this case
b) It can cause serious injuries by forcing other vehicles to swerve.

Very frustrating.

actually taking the doesnt cause much harm argument to its logical conclusion...

pedestrains should be able to just walk out into the road wherever they want to without looking or anything. they do even less harm and so should be able to flaunt the highway code and common sense to their hearts content

Agree with this fully.

Yup, everyone should stick to the bloody rules. So everyone knows where each other stands.

This Pedestrian v cyclist v drivers v whatever is ridiculous bollocks....

I stop at red lights on my bicycle and I don't know why anymore
so do i and i know why. someone on here a few years back made what i thought was a very persuasive argument about being seen to respect the rule of the road leading to greater respect being shown by motorists towards cyclists.

further, there are so many new cyclists who don't know their arse from their elbow, they need to see some guidance from others about safe cycling techniques. so i always make sure that i'm as far advanced at a red light to be clear of cars etc behind, but i also make sure that i don't jump the red light either.

I don't think that'll change the attitudes and bad behaviour of the worst motorists, some of whom are of the opinion that cyclists are neither as important as them, nor do they share as much right to use the road,

It probably won't change the worst behaviours i agree. But i do think it can help to promote a very different view of cyclists amongst the majority of drivers and peds over time.

Some cyclists think the same of motorists, some motorists think the same of pedestrians, some people don't know who they hate the most.

Fucking stupid if you ask me... Just stick to the highway code, all of them. Instead of coming out with bullshit excuses, as to why they shouldn't.

I am actually quite dissapointed that there were no decent pictures for my steamroller of doom idea.

Will a Shovel Headed Hell Machine do until something more suitable comes along?

This might help: http://www.thatvideosite.com/view/3607

Or this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQgAMkMmsfg It's a long wait, but there's an implied bicyle under a steamroller at 11:00

ermm... they can... they just don't cos they want to live to see the evening...

with the exception of oxford st where their will to live has been sucked dry...

well.. the traffic's stopped so you might as well just wander out aimlessly, there won't be anything else moving in that lot. Especially not something very thin and made out of metal, travelling at about 10 mph. Yeah, just wander out. Maybe looking in the opposite direction to any oncoming traffic. Cos there won't be any, obviously.

I hated cycling down Oxford St.

Following to the logical conclusion I think that pedestrian should be safe...

You more or less sum up the shared space street design philosophy. If you travel to places like Norway and Holland you'll see how it works. The principle is that everyone who uses the road should share it. In cities you drive slow enough to be able to stop, should a pedestrian make a mistake and walk out in front of a car, for instance. IMO It's a much more civilised way of urban design than we have here.

One of the way it works is by removing rights of way, such as taking out traffic lights. This way rather than ploughing on regardless you have to pay more attention to your surroundings - and possible dangers.

Bringing this back to the thread, on UK roads cycles are an afterthought. With average spend in the UK on dedicated cycle infrastructure is around £0.50 a head. In Holland it's £8.00 per head. No wonder that cyclists don't always comply with woefully inadequate urban design.

Perhaps the most important thing is that the shared space approach saves lives.

I don't just have a nerdy interest in this. I guess being involved in a fatal accident makes you look at road safety differently. I've also lived / cycled through a few countries in Northern Europe - the UK is one of the worst I've experienced on a bike.

so do i and i know why...being seen to respect the rule of the road leading to greater respect being shown by motorists towards cyclists.

Ditto. With once exception, which sort of relates to the point BigPhil has made enough. There's one part of my journey where in order to get to the nice, safe advanced cycle lane at a rather hectic set of lights, you more often than not have to cross a red light just before. In order to really take advantage of the safety, you have to cross the red light. So, after some umming and arring, that has now become the only red light I will (carefully) cross. I mean, come on Lambeth council, WTF?

Agree with BigPhil - there are pitiful facilities for cyclists, and some of them seem a bit ridiculous anyway, i.e. the cycle lanes on pavements that run for 100 metres and then stop again.

I've invented a good way to avoid the pigs.

Finally! FIGHTER JET safety for the discerning cyclist.

Sick of braking for traffic and obstacles and red lights? Can't understand danger? Enjoy a bit of spinal compression?

What you need is the EJECTOBIKE™.

Here we see our cyclist has encountered a hazard ahead. They cannot possibly stop in time. Surely death is unavoidable.

No! This cyclist is riding the EJECTOBIKE™. A small explosive charge detonates the seat clamp.

Minutes later, a rocket integrated into the seat tube fires and propels our victim to safety, probably.

Another life saved, with the EJECTOBIKE™. Also available in blue. Many, many patents pending.

I bought a bike and started cycling a bit since March this year, haven't had a bike in about 8 years or so, and it does my head in to the way some peeps cycle about town with total disregard for the highways code (jumping lights, mounting pavements etc.). I know it's a pain in the arse to stop at lights when you feel you cross safely but you could say the same as a car driver.

I don't have a car but hired one for month recently as was more than a bit freaked out in some places around town about the way lot's of cyclists and motorcyclists were using the road around me. Seriously disconcerting at some points to be over and undertaken by bikes and motorbikes at the same time without enough road space and cut in front of, weaving and so on.

The sad fact is that I think that cyclists need to lead by example in terms of obeying the rules of the road. I don't mean that they should not be assertive but I think the way many (perhaps even most from my experience whilst cycling over the last 6 months) use the roads undermines all cyclists rightful complaints about the way motorists treat them.

Just my humble opinion as a pedestrian, cyclist and occasional motorist.

That's pretty much my exact experience/opinion as well
(although I've been cycling for longer)

appease the authorities without slowing down much:

when approaching red lights (preferably ones that have just turned red) leap from your bicycle*, shoulder it, leg it to the other side, jump back on. no laws broken, no fines, not too much slowing down:cool:

*if you're riding a fixed wheel you can use the up stroke to propel you into the air. :D
