Cyclist mugged on Regent's Canal this morning

People sometimes shout at me 'It's a canal path, not a cycle path', to which I reply 'and where's your fucking barge then, arse-face?'

i've seen the people who do this sort of thing - hardly pillars of the community. More likely they're just sociopathic cunts out to cause aggro.
i'm raising a serious point, in that a lot of people i know who use the canal as a footpath resent it being used as a cycle motorway by a number of people with the apparent social graces and road skills of a rhinoceros.

what, and then you stop to put yr point of view in a calmer and more considered argument & listen to their objections? or do you scarper?

But its a point you've made ad nauseum. As far as I know no one who rides a bike in that anti-social manner is posting on Urban 75. Maybe you should make your point elsewhere? Perhaps directly to the cyclists concerned?

No, I laugh and keep riding like a loon, frightening old ladies and listening to the crunch of baby bones beneath my wheels. :)

Getting your bike knicked at traffic lights used to be common when 'mountain bikes' first came on the scene.

And you wonder why people don't stop for red lights or hop on the curb?

It's never occurred to me in the 30 odd years I've been cycling that I might actually be vulnerable to a mugging.

That is depressing.

I don't stop for red lights and regularly hop on the curb, but that's because I like to travel much faster than cars do.

KX to Camden - not a nice stretch.

I never take the canal when heading to Kentish Town or Camden from KX, I usually pedal up to Bagleys, turn left, and go through the back way.

Usually because I fear falling in the canal.

I had some training in London last month, so I took my bike on the train from Sheffield the night before and used the cycle route recommended on the Transport for London website to attempt to where I was staying the night. I got off the train at 8pm and set off along said route, which included the Regents canal towpath. I have never felt so unsafe, I was almost in tears (not like me to feel frightened) and decided to get off it ASAP. When I could find a way to get off and onto the street (there didn't seem to be many ways off the towpath) I was then completely lost, having no alternative map (stupid!). all the people I asked for directions were so helpful, it turned into a life affirming adventure. London people are nice – thankyou! I might write to Ken Livingstone and tell him his stupid routes are dangerous.

Front page of East End Advertiser says that "tow path mugging gang" have been caught. Sounds like it could be the same people who got the guy in front of me (near Salmon's Lane Lock on Regent's Canal).

I'm not one to be cynical, but the rport says that many cyclists were on their way to and from Canary Wharf, so the relative affluence of these cycists might have been an incentive both for the muggers and the police getting them (if they in fact have...)

This thread's quite worrying... especially since I have lately been taking for granted the fact that I've not been mugged or had my bike robbed. I have rode past quite a few dodgy characters and senses that they wanted to have a go and would if I looked a bit more passive and less like some kind of serial killer... (Some people have mentioned that I look like the kind of person that people wouldn't mess with, but in truth I'm a skinny c--t who hates the thought of having a proper hard fight and wouldn't stand a chance against 2 people).

I think I might just be being paranoid but one of my cycle tools is coming out of my bag and going in my pocket where I can reach them, just in case anyone tries to have a go :(

I'm sorry you've had a bad experience, but don't let that colour your opinion about all the bike routes in London. There are some very good ones.
