Cycling kit

multi tools of any kind/size are great little investment for any cyclist.

Yep they are, I carry one along with a puncture repair kit. Never got around to carrying a spare inner tube tho I probably should.

puncture repair kit & spare inner tube.
multi tool.
condoms
lock, lights & lube.
Proofs. A-Z. Magnet.
I always have a frisbee in the bag to.
this makes a great recreational game & also serves welll as a tray for holding bits on road side punctures or for skinning up on & sometimes eating of.

I would definitely recommend it. It just saves a lot of time if you do get a puncture as you can simply swap the tubes (after checking the tyre for glass/thorns of course). You can leave repairing the punctured tube until you get home, then and use it as a spare.

obviously you're forced to use your patch kit if you get a puncture in the second tube but they say thorns never strikes twice (or was that lightning? ) and anyway I avoid fixing punctures when I'm out by carrying a whole backpack full of labelled tubes just in case :D

Name and address of next of kin on a bit of paper.

That's why my brother started wearing dog tags.

I made the mistake of telling my mother - and she couldn't work out whether to be pleased or horrified for months...

I think I need to learn how to fix problems with my bike/a puncture before I start carrying around all these things :)

I will get on the case, seems a bit silly not too - some of those tools are a little bit daunting though :o

I just have a bottle, lights and locks and an Allan key set.
I have a spare inner tube at home but never a repair kit - a spare inner tube only costs £4 - would rather just replace it than mess about with a repair kit. I wouldn't know what to do anyway. I hate getting my hands dirty.

You and me both. I can't stand having grease and filth on my hands.

I carry two locks, an allan key set, a pump, a bottle and my lights.

I must admit, the last couple of times I've had a puncture I've just locked up the bike and taken the whole wheel home with me on the tube. Seemed easier than faffing around beside the road. Suppose it depends where you get a puncture though really...

Spare tubes might 'only' be four quid and that's not much to spend if you rarely get punctures, but, throwing a perfectly good, reuseable tube away every time you get a puncture is terribly wasteful.

Many non-renewable petrochemicals are used in their manufacture and they are extremely resistant to environmental degradation, so they stick around for a long time once they've been disposed of.....

A puncture repair kit generally costs a pound and contains eight patches. That's eight punctures for a quid. Whereas replacing eight £4 tubes would cost £32...

It might be quicker to replace the tube than to fix the puncture, but it only takes about 5 minutes longer and you don't have to take the wheel off.

I might go on this:

Cycle Maintenance

We run one-day courses at our central London location on a monthly basis. Our basic course is suitable for anybody wanting to learn how to keep a bike in good working order. Learn to fix a puncture or change your brake blocks. Our intermediate course focuses on more complex tasks, including wheel truing and re-greasing bearings.
It says it's £60 a day, but when I did another course it was only £8... subsidised rates if you live or work in Southwark, Lambeth, and a few other boroughs

I guess I should go on one - I'm completely mechanophobic - I can barely change a plug - I had to get a friend to put the bottle thingy on my bike cos I couldn't work it out.:o

Can someone recommend where to find cheapo cycling overtrousers for when it's pissing down?

I had a pair of waterproofs on yesterday, which I always carry with me in case, but I still got completely soaked. I don't want the high tech kind you have to keep respraying, just cheap waterproof vinyl or whatever it is. I can't seem to find them anywhere!

thanks :)

I normally take with me waterproofs, lights, and two locks.
