cycling in the snow

I cycled in wellies cos I knew I'd have to walk some of the roads and wore my waterproof socks

tomorrow I'm going to try my veggie trekkers

neither give great grip - its a very short ride

I did about 40 miles on the MTB today. Crashed once - span right round at low speed and landed gently in the road with the grace of a dead swan.

Generally it's safe - keep slow, ride in a straight line, be careful applying power. Calculate your line carefully, aim for either thick snow or the slush where cars have been, and make your direction changes when it's safest. Brake early and gently, don't brake at all when you know it's on ice.

Cycled from New cross to Westminister this evening v slowly, roads were ok,some fuckin twat blew his horn at me for being slow

After having done about 10km today, it's not something I especially want to repeat. My rear slick was wiping out all over the place. Interesting though, heh :)

I'll be setting out half an hour earlier today. I'll use the roads as the cycle track is likely to be too scary - though thinking about it I used part of it yesterday evening .... I'll get off and push where necessary, but I don't want to be stuck at work without my bike if a nice warm sou' westerly turns up and melts everything.

Heavy snow showers forecast for south west...with some hail, thunder and lightning!

All grist to the mill :D

If this winter thing takes off I may have to get in a cheap set of knobblies.

I have to go in as my colleague is away.

Well I left 35 minutes early and arrived 30 minutes early. :p

I felt well disposed to the cars I shared the main roads with and who melted the snow for me - except for the usual couple of tossers who cut it too close and too fast for absoluteny no reason.

I got my bike out yesterday and pushed it to the main road with the intention of riding on from there.

But after a couple of mins I turned back as it felt a bit dangerous with my slick tyres... building a snowman with the kids was much more fun than going to work anyway.

Today was ok though - stuck to main roads and got to work in pretty much the same time as usual.

I was going to cycle into work yesterday and today but bottled it - didn't want risk another injury.

I'm in Cardiff. Got a 20 minute round trip cycle in to work and back.
Just cycled in to work to pick up enough stuff to keep me going working from home, and all of the main roads were very clear. Just pushed it on the side roads with compacted snow.
Started to snow bigtime while I was underway though.
Will be going back home ASAP and staying there.:)

Think i'll be venturing out on 2 wheels again tomorrow, after my bus journies today - the main roads all looked clear but the pavements are a total menace, black ice and compacted ice so stepping off the bus or walking along the pavement was treacherous as fuck.

That was my perception in Bristol.

I passed a chap pushing his bike on a lethal section - I almost drew his attention to the irony ...

If I was old(er) / infirm, I think I would be avoiding going out - either that or walk in the road in something fluorescent.

It's amazing how it seems like much of the effort has gone into clearing main routes but very little effort at all at any clearance on pavements. Tower Hamlets at least have road sweepers out putting some grit down whereas Hackney has clear main roads and everything else all iced up, the paths to the local school, the park, the elderly resource centre up the road for the crumblies!!!

tower hamlets are nearly always better than hackney at treating pavements and less major roads

Yes I agree. Its a sham..
All the effort go's into clearing the roads. Lambeth was god arwfull on the pavments.
I was getting total abuse for walking on the roadway by motor vehicle users..

One can not win. I'd have been better off cycling.

Some one told me its a legal obligation for eveyone to clean the snow from outside their own house - is that true?

Damn.

I was about to celebrate that all the snow had melted but it's just started again. :p

Luckily it seems to be more rain than snow.

Well I cycled to Balham and back today - it was fine on the very mainest of main roads, but even fairly busy side roads were a bit dodge. I didn't really enjoy it tbh...

Cycled to work and back today, again using main roads instead of the cycle path. Not so fun - most of the road has been cleared but there's some ice that creeps out from the curb, and there are too many inconsiderate motorists getting too close. I was aware on quite a few occasions that if a rogue patch of ice was to make me slip I would have gone right under the bus behind who wasn't giving me enough space. Twice I had to slam on the brakes for vehicles overtaking then pulling infront of me :mad:

I went out cycling in it yesturday, New Cross Road was O.K as it had been properly gritted, everywhere else I was sliding all over the place.
This evening when I was out walking my dog I could see it is more icy then ever - would'nt like to be out there on a bike in it.

Thats the problem, sometimes you have to move further out into the road to avoid patches of ice and black slushey snow.

It's not a lot of fun on a scooter either. I didn't see a single other motorbike on the way to work today, and only two cyclists- normally there are loads of either. Driving on side roads wasn't a lot of fun, though on main roads it was okay if keeping to the middle of the lane.

Cycled in today..

One poor lady came off her bike (she was ok) & one chap took a skid for a good 2 metre run.. Both between Herne Hill & Denmark hill..

Very Very slippy indeed.
Black Ice on the roads
Red Ice in the bus lanes...
Not Seen any Green Ice, cos there aint not enough Cycle lanes..:D

Seems to be fine in my part of Bristol this morning.

Nice friendly wet roads rather than icy. :)

Touch wood I'll get home again this evening without probs, but they're promising a lot of snow in the area tonight. :(

Cycled in today. Only real problem was visibility, with the winds blasting the snow into my eyes. Other than that, nice fat gnarly off road tyres made for a slide free commute.

Oh, and I've got a slow flat in my rear tire now. Curses.

I had a puncture yesterday on the way home, and I have a pair of new tyres in the office, but I'm wary of breaking in new rubber in these conditions.
