Cycling day trips from Edinburgh

GB and I have two days to ourselves in Edinburgh this week. We're taking our folding bicycles and would like to go somewhere, countryside-y which is accessible by train from the centre for a day's cycling. We're used to doing fairly long, hilly rides so it doesn't have to be completely flat or short, - a moderate distance and difficulty would be best. (about 20-30 miles maybe?)

Any recommendations?

The Union Canal is an obvious one to me - Starts from Fountainbridge & goes through some lovely places. There is a thread further down this forum.

Also train to Haddington & lots of nice easy back-road routes in East Lothian or slightly harder ones into the Lammermuir Hills.

Trian into Fife, say Ladybank or Leuchars & lots of nice cycling around Falkland/
Cupar etc.

Some excellent cycling on generally very quiet roads in parts of the Borders but rail access is not so good. Can you still get bikes on country buses? Innerlethen is a bit of a hub for various off road routes of different standards. Also around Duns to Berwick.

If you come as far north as Leuchars and don't let me know beforehand I will be MOST upset. Tis only across the water to me.

Hubby says go to Edinburgh Bike Cooperative site(can't remember addy just now) coz they have routes for in and around the city that might be interesting.
