Cycling 101....

mums on the school run who just stick their baby in a pushchair out into the bus lane to get past a crowd on the pavement without looking  I very nearly hit one today, line of queueing cars and an empty bus lane which I was freewheeling down luckily not too fast. I had to swerve to miss the pushchair and involuntarily called her a crazy lady, then realised as I passed her that she's the mum of a kid in my daughter's class.... :o  She IS a crazy lady though.

Maybe they are just enjoying the rest and having a breather.

and by the time you've done all that dismounting and walking and re-mounting, the few seconds you may have gained will be hardly worth the effort.

I've done it a few times in the past and on more than one occasion found that the lights I was waiting at have now changed and I have to wait for all the cars that were behind me at the lights to clear before I can get back on the road.

I don't bother and just wait at the lights. It's an easier life.

I'm always seeing this, makes me chuckle. If you time it right then maybe it makes sense but you have to know the light patterns and get stopped as it changes.

Whilst I understand certain bikes look better without mud guards:

A: I don't like to look at what appears to be shit up someone's back when it rains.

B: I don't appreciate getting splattered by the shit your wheel spits up at me when you overtake me or I come within 2 metres of you.

hear hear !

I go on group rides most Sundays, and you won't find anyone without mudguards - or a rack come to that.

I've been cycling 22 years now and it never crossed my mind not to have both - on road, hybrid and MTB.

Being kind to following riders is more of a challenge - you need mudflaps to do the job properly.

If the water flicking of my rear wheel is hitting you then you're riding too close to me...especially given the conditions are wet.

.

There is a BIG difference from an organised Sunday ride a la CTC (who insist on mudguards) to moaning about some herbert overtaking you and catching you with a bit of spray. In the latter instance I would just say 'tough!' and urge everybody to move on.:)

It depends on the context. I was out for a group ride last Sunday and it was intermittently drizzly .. one does want to chat when on quiet lanes- it's half the fun - and I noticed the spray coming from the Moulton I was riding with whenever we had to go single file.

some bikes won't take mudguards. Mine hasn't got mudguard eyes and because it has square section seatstays you can't use p-clip mounts for example - I can put a Crud Raceguard on the seatpost but that will only stop me getting the stripe up my back, it won't help anyone behind me.

1 out of 2 problems solved though... ;)

No sorry, just not true...I have been splattered by a cyclist 2 metres in front of me before now.

and at 15mph in the wet your stopping distance is less than 2m? wow, good brakes :p

my bike doesn't take any guards that I've found yet tbh, and I'll be fucked if I'm putting some makeshift plastic bottle thing on an £800 cool as fuck bike, y'all can just get better jackets :p

I knew it was only fashion concious cyclists who would argue this one...:facepalm:

Even more reason why you are on all banished to Cycling 101...mwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! :p

I'm not 'fashion conscious', I just chose to spend quite a lot of money building a really nice mountain bike that doesn't happen to take mudguards. Because I wanted a bike that worked really well. Why would I want to zip-tie a rattly cut up plastic bottle on it? I did actually do that when I was riding a shitty hack bike that I didn't care about 15 years ago. But not on my nice bike thanks :)

Excusessssssssssssssssssssssssssss!:D
