Cycling 101....

Troll!

I should point out that I don't wear in-canal phones, and I reckon I'm only able to do this because I've built up better observation than 90% of people on the road.

i wasn't trolling - i'm genuinely surprised and shared this with my colleagues and they didn't believe me either.
what about sirens?

Because sound isn't a necessary part of driving or riding. When you're in a car the only sense you rely on is sight; you're basically insulated from the world. When you wear a crash helmet, your hearing is impaired, and coupled with the noise of your engine your hearing is pretty non-existant (IME of riding motorbikes as a passenger anyway).

So you don't use your sense of hearing that much, if at all, piloting powered vehicles. If you're going to criticise people with headphones for anything, it's that depending on what you're listening to can be more or less distracting - the whole 'But it's a whole sense going' thing is pish.

Lol at this ridiculous post. You rely on all your senses if you posess them. If you don't posess them you can't rely on them, but thats a long way from not needing them.

It's not hard. Cyclists are especially shit, and people in cars don't have to worry so much. I don't think I'm better, I just think most other people are worse.

I've done maybe 38,000 miles.

To put it in perspective, I chose not to overtake the traffic I was stuck in on the way home this evening - the road was greasy and there were too many buses and lorries, but I was perfectly aware of other cyclists weaving in and out of the slow moving traffic and on and off the pavement (sans headphones, but also sans grey cells) , and had no trouble hearing the two police cars from a very long way off.

As I stated earlier, IMHO it clearly depends entirely on the individual and the conditions.

I found that The Who played at high volume while riding a motorcycle was a very bad idea - that was the only time I ever tried it.... though I had a mad mate who used to do the ton on his VFR750 with Nirvana at full blast ...

When I am forced to drive a car, I do so with the windows and sunroof open unless it's actually peeing down because I feel so disconnected from the outside world.

People who sail out from behind stopped buses without looking are also fools of the highest order.

fucking right.

can i add people who huff, puff and sprint to overtake only to croak on the next stretch of road- what's wrong with a steady pace?

as for the headphones- never found it a problem (apart from certain pieces of music :o), don't use them at the moment though.

You don't douse yourself in Lynx or have ill-fitting trousers by any chance ? :D

That sort of thing has made me go for it more than once ...

i have never ever worn lynx... my trousers fit me just fine thank you very much :p

do you have a thing for such people? is this "the lynx effect" the adverts talk about?

As a rider, I can confirm this is pretty much true. I don't really use my hearing as part of my riding skills, because all I can hear is the bike and some wind noise.

I don't use my MP3 player by choice on the bike, but that's mainly because I'm worried about it distracting me. But then, I've got a wandering attention span anyway, so I need all my concentration. I know plenty of motorcyclists who do listen to music whilst riding, though.

well that's another thing - it's about concentration isn't it? music makes you listen to it, it takes you over. it seems absolute madness to me to listen to it when driving or riding

On the motorbike, for me personally, it definitely is. However, I can't say it's wrong for others if they want to...

In the car, I always play music.

i've never driven, but when i listen to music it hogs my attention totally. people talk to me and i don't hear them. i assumed this would be the case for everyone else. if not, i feel sorry for them.
if i was listening to some exciting music, i'm sure i would be driving suitably recklessly as if i was in a film and the soundtrack was playing.

Moving on:

Cycling in high heels!!!!

Sooooo they have no grip on the sole and the heel can get stuck in the pedal...SMART!!! not...

Heels in the bag, ladies....change your footwear at your destination. You are an accident waiting to happen.

....and just so you know...not every person looking your way is thinking 'corrrrr...how sexy!!'....most of us are thinking...'nice shoes, but not worth dying for'

:D

Cycling in thin-soled sandals gets me too. I have to use stiffeners in my shoes - not just because I can feel every single spike on my pedals, but for pedalling efficiency too. (I doubt I could cope with SPDs or clips).

I used to see a deaf woman cycling quite often - her bike had a big flag on the back advising people she was deaf.

rapha are an overpriced bicycle clothing company. their stuff astronomically priced and aimed at... fuck knows? basically it's not race gear but takes itself waaay more seriously than the messengery companies like swrve and swobo (it also completely prices messengers out of the market).

there are people you see out in full rapha get up. it's weird. they are mainly* contemptible. you can buy what are essentially plus-fours with a place for your ipod for about £250

*there are some people i know who work for them, have worked for them, have modelled for them and have lots of free rapha stuff. most readily admit their clothing is a bit odd and are alright people.

rapha=sepia toned amphetamine fuelled tom simpson glory days retro wear for fund managers ivesting in their first Cervelo. If you want proper bike wear that costs the earth buy Assos, if you want proper bike wear that doesn't cost the earth buy Giordana or Endura. If you want messenger chic buy from one of the companies Boycey mentioned. Rapha just seems an expensive way to shout 'I'm an idiot with too much money'.

Not an annoyance but I am always bemused by cyclists who just sit their waiting when there is a 4 way pedestrian green light, while I can see that they dont want to cycle through I am forever baffled when they dont just get off and push the bike across. I do it all the time. You do get odd looks though.

Maybe they are just enjoying the rest and having a breather.
