Cycle lockers in central London?

Now I've got a few days free I fancy taking my bike down to London on the train and seeing the stuff you miss on a tube or even a bus. I fancy going round Bloomsbury and Notting Hill.

Only one trouble, it's a folder and it can't be secured properly on a regular bike stand. Do any car parks in central London (especially interested in those two areas) offer lockers you can secure with a padlock?

Never heard of this concept.

Folding bikes I ask you.:)

We don't do personal lockable spaces in central London due to terrorists and all that jazz.

Would be madness, sheer madness I tell you.

There are lockers and luggage storage places at train stations which would probably take bicycles.

You might be better off posting in transport - I know all the cycling geeks read that (and iirc editor and eme have folding bikes)

Cycling geeks?! Never!

I'm at a bit of a loss as to why you can't lock it up - can you explain why you can't lock a folder?

Depending on the day of the week, you could lock it in the basement of my office in Vauxhall if that helps? Could even lend you a lock for the day. Or there are left luggage places at some stations, but you have to pay and get it xrayed to make sure you're not some sort of terroristzzz.

me too.. I lock my folder - if you can't get a D-lock through it you'll have to use a less safe cable though.. I tend to use a combination of the two.

Take the saddle with you? (That's a problem with most bikes though!)

Basically - no there're aren't any bike lockers (there are some in some stations in Kent I've seen but not central London). Some train stations (London Bridge for example) have large bike rack sections actually on the platforms. We've used this for folders hoping (but no idea if it's the case) that they'll be slightly safer what with all the traffic and rail staff and CCTV.

Yes but on my folder it is just a single flip of a lever and it's gone.

Plus even after 9 months use 3-4 times a week it still looks shiney and new- it wasn't cheap but it looks even more expensive than it was.

Thanks anyway

Well yes - the seat is exactly the same with my folder and also one of my other bikes (a non-folder) - but realistically - the only way (apart from putting it in a locker - and there are none) to stop someone taking it is to take it yourself.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Actually - just took a look at my seat and I reckon if you had a small enough cable you could thread it between the upright post and the cross bars underneath the seat and then secure it to the main part of the bike - a thief would really have to want that seat then...

Can't you replace the quick release with a bolt clamp? I don't know if you can or would want to on a folding bike, but you can on most conventional ones.

If his is anything like mine - the foldability kind of relies on being able to collapse the seat right down to the frame. You could still fold it without doing that but it would kind of defeat the purpose and on mine, anyway, I wouldn't be able to rest the thing on the ground without it toppling over.

That's OK, thanks for trying :)

This isn't the end of the world- if I lived in london or needed (as opposed to merely wanting) to cycle there I might look for another alternative, or just buy a second hand spare bike.

As it is, I'll stick to public transport- it's not as though London is short of it.

And I can sit smugly knowing Derby has at least 1 thing London doesn't :p :D

Is there now such a thing?

I'm going to London in a couple of weeks on one of those 'free night in a luxury hotel in London!!!!!' gift cards (which you can only take on a Thursday when it's raining and you've got to stay in Eltham). I want to take my bike but won't need it til Friday.

Is there anywhere secure to leave it overnight? I'm coming in to Waterloo. What are those enclosed racks round the side of the station - they look quite beefy?

Ta xx
