Cycle helmets

My helmet scares old ladies.

I'd NEVER! ride without one. I've had two fairly bad accidents and both times my head went down. It's fairly obvious, your gripping the bars so your not going to get the hands down first in the majority of circumstances. Usually I go over on my side but the impact smashes the side of my head on the ground.

Not necessarily true. It's not as if people ride with cleats on their gloves, clipped into a pair of grips...

In every crash I've ever had (and believe me, I've crashed a lot) my hands and feet have always gone down first. It's an instinctive action - when I know I'm going to crash I stick my hands and legs out to protect/break the fall of the rest of my body.

No offence but if you don't do that too, I think there's something wrong with you! :D

No i agree with you, maybe that was a bit of a statement :) it is instinctive to put hands down first hence I have many pairs of gloves with the shammy missing on the palms :)

It the two times I hit a swung open car door that I didn't manage to get hands down, happened too fast.

I've come off my bike almost as often as I've got on it and while my knees and wrists have taken a pounding I;ve never had so much as a bump to the old noggin helmeted or otherwise (I wear a helmet sometimes).
