Cutty Sark on fire [May 2007]

Felt quite angry at the thought that this may have been vandalism, but

... makes it feel much worse.
 :(

Tbh, and hard-hearted though it may be, I wouldn't have objected too hard to City of Adelaide being broken up. You can't preserve everything, especially ships, whcih are big and expensive, and we've already got one ship of that type in existence. Or we did, before this happened.

I don't often agree with a lot of contributors to BBC Talking Point, but on this occasion I'm in complete sympathy with some of the more hardline ones regarding what can and should be done about whoever started the fire. Assuming it was arson rather than a tragic accident, that is.

Wheres the City of Adelaide? (the ship not the place!)

Scottish Maritime Museum in Ayrshire, according to the BBC. What sort of condition it's in I've no idea, but probably none too good given how long the debate's been going on about whether they can raise enough cash to stop it coming to pieces...

This is very sad, the Cutty Sark is quite the symbol of Britain.

Sailing ship - check
Maritime trade - check
Tea - check

The London Olympics is gonna cost at least £10bn for 3 weeks of people running round in circles and jumping over sticks. Trident's replacement, anything from £17-34 bn for use against an enemy that no longer exists. I'm sure if there was the will the money could be found.

How much does it cost to maintain a ship like this?

Whilst this is no doubt a disaster, all of the masts, spars, rigging, anything not nailed down, and 1/2 the planking is in storage whilst the hull was (until the fire) undergoing restoration.
Personally given how big the frame timbers are, I expect she will be restored to her former glory.
Yes, its is strangely fortunate timing, but I will certainly be going to see the HMS Victory before that goes up in smoke one day.

I completely agree, and I'd much rather see a few million being spent restoring an old ship than paying for a few people in lycra to run around and jump into sandpits, but I think we're very much in the minority!

No idea what the upkeep of something like the Cutty Sark costs, but the restoration was supposed to be something like £25 million. City of Adelaide wouldn't cost a lot less than that and, being less famous than Cutty Sark, wouldn't claw as much back in visitor revenue either. I'd much rather she were kept than not, especially now Cutty Sark's been damaged, but who's going to front up the money?

Sadly, there are plenty of troglodytes already on BBC Talking POint asking what the point of spending money to restore 'just an old ship' is...

on the bright side (if it is fubar), they should be able to raise enough sympathy money to build a proper working replica. (like the golden hinde, only bigger). What a great tribute that would be.

When they find whoever did this they shoudl keel haul the fuckers...hang on, is Greenwich still classified as a Royal Naval dockyard? IIRC isn't the death penalty still active for setting fire to Naval dockyards?

But keel hauling at the very least...

That went in 1971.
Off to Portsmouth with a box of matches before the skates give any more boats to the iranians:)

Well obviously it's a conspiracy to get funding for the restoration from the insurance.

At least urban should be able to see that.

Police would like to interview a short, red-faced man who was seen trundling away with a smile on his face:
