Currys, Brixton (and general service in Brixton stores)

I've never had any problems in Argos at all...

(Ms T - my brother, who's in "the trade" says that Aldi, Lidl and Waitrose have bought a bunch of Woolworth shops, - so you never know you might get your Aldi yet!!)

A few yrs back, a friend's daughter, who was 3 or 4 at the time, used to point and say "Daddy, that's the bad shop" whenever they drove past Brixton Curry's. :D

Bought a fancy toaster from Currys 3 weeks ago.
It is now proper fucked. After reading this thread, now dreading to take it back.

Mothercare can make Curry's look polite and helpful.

You would think that the training manual for a children's store would suggest not whinging about your boyfriend, using 'fucking' as every second word, while you fulfil your obligatory 5mins looking at your computer / pile of plastic bags / mobile phone before noticing you have a customer.

HOWEVER I did encounter a helfpful young woman in Curry's this week. I asked a question, and after looking on the list of poduct features displayed large on the item (usually the full extent of customer service they can offer) and noticing, as I had, that it didn't give the answer, she actually went off and found the instruction book and found the info!

Maybe they're reading this thread... I went into both Curry's and Halford's on Friday and was in and out in 5 mins on both occasions having successfully purchased what I needed!

Last time I went to Curry's there was one poor bastard on a till, with a big queue and a manager telling him off for not serving people fast enough, hence he wasn't serving anyone and the queue was getting longer.

The twat just ignored the suggestions from the people waiting that maybe he should shut up and open another till himself.

Really, don't you need a receipt?

If you paid by card you don't need a receipt, they keep records...
I reckon i've taken back about 3 microwaves, a PVR a couple of digital receivers and various other bits and pieces, only some of which weren't working! In fact the the PVR was still working and i'd lost the remote control:D Any other company and i might feel guilty, but their service is so appalling I don't...

Halfords - :D - we've bought a bike or two from there - last time they "assembled" it for gaijinboy. He got as far as the Hootenanny and at least one pedal had fallen off and something else was about to go.

i did manage to get about £40 worth of freebies though after politely complaining at great length :)
to be fair to Brixton Halfords, the manager of the Bike Hut's quite helpful, and also the prices for some items can be really good - better than the internet even...

some people are astonished to find anything less than sniveling servility in the retail staff they encounter. They can fuck off tbf

Is it wrong to expect people working in shops to be polite and helpful? I am always nice to people at work - makes everyone's life easier, innit?

I got great service today in Carphone Warehouse in Brixton. A very nice young man (God I sound like a granny) went out of his way to explain all the options to me. He didn't even get a sale out of me, because he advised me to go away and try to get a better deal from my existing provider! :)

no, politeness doesn't cost, but conversely is it fair to expect minimum wage staff in crap jobs to be constantly happy?

Tbf, I've encountered similar scenes as this a few times, in similar shops.
I wonder how you do actually motivate minimum wage workers with pricks like this in charge of them

When I first came to Brixton I worked in a shop and was almost unfailingly cheerful, polite and helpful. Most customers were great but there was a sizeable minority who were rude, nasty, unreasonable and occasionally even threatening. That kind of person could actually leave you feeling quite shocked or tearful. You could be left feeling unmotivated all day.

How come John Lewis & M&S staff manage it, yet so many others can't seem to?

See my post above.

When I was a teen, I had a Saturday job at Tesco (late 80's, when it was still a real shithole of a supermarket) on the deli counter & the manager of the dept. was such an utter, utter vile, bitter little cunt that as a consiquence, none of us gave the tiniest little bit of a shit.
(cue stories of hygiene & general slackness that would have Tesco in court these days).

Currys would be quite handy for me location-wise, but I've been there about three times and never, ever found anyone able to help. I don't mean I had a really difficult problem - I mean I couldn't find anybody full stop. I've also found this in Morley's. For smaller electrical stuff I'd much rather use the excellent place in Herne Hill anyway.

Woolies used to be a slight variation on this theme - dozens of staff squabbling among themselves over every transaction as the queues lengthened. Fucking horrible music at ear-bleeding levels completed the picture as far as the customer experience went. I think training and support was the issue there.
