CURRY - a whole new world

I've had a chicken curry pie before. 'twas a fucking awful experience.

I'm not a fan of curried shepherds pie either.

Not entirely true.
Don't see why it wouldn't work though. Everything goes with curry doesn't it? I've resorted to sausage curry and fish-finger curry in moments of extreme boredom.

My mum does sausage curry. It's not bad. I prefer her bacon curry though.

She can do a whole fry-up in curry form: hardboiled egg curry, sausage curry, bacon curry, mushroom curry, potato curry and fried bread.

*barf*

Cor. :)
Bacon curry does sound terrible, but then I ain't much for bacon.

Egg curry is nice, it is actually a proper dish. In tesco I sometimes buy these packets of curry, and you add one or two chopped hardboiled egg to the mixture. It's yummy.

Yeah, I've made a few egg curries from scratch and they can be pretty good. My mate gave me a nepalese recipe that used 20 eggs

Often have curry without rice here, although generally only when I've got the tawa down and have cooked a mountain of rotis or parathas. I'm a one handed eating machine once I get going

To be fair, I often add a tiny dollop of rice. Just seems right somehow.

Curry rotis and West Indian style curry dumplings are the food of kings.

I had the No Rice epiphany a couple of years ago now. Much prefer just the curry and a naan/chappatis/paratha/whatever to mop it up with.

I usually share a rice and a large nan but have gone nan and just curry quite a few times. One of the best tips I had while travelling round India was to avoid the rice and order bread instead to avoid bad guts. It worked.

I was like, why do you do that? Why don't you have rice?! And she said, 'Tis the only way!! Don't fill up on bread, that's how they get you - and rice is the foreign version of bread!!'

And yet she chose to have a naan, the bread version of bead?

I don't normally order rice.

Went to a great modern curry house in Leeds. They didn't do rice. Instead you got these HUGE Nan bread things which were hung off these hat stand looking spikes. I looked like your table had sails.

Best curry I've ever had.

He's new to curry iirc!

or is that someone else that just realised they like curry?
I've just discovered curry.

I'll have to have a look later see what I'm going to cook for Sat tea. :)

when i lived in birmingham i'd just have a balti and a nan. just break off a bit your nan and dip it in your balti dish. lovely.

Do any of you eat this way, with just a curry and a bread? Will it be enough for a growing Wookey?
originating from the indian sub-continent meself I can tell you we usually eat bread most of the time. when growing up I think we had bread/naan 90% of the time and rice like 10%. at a big party or special occasion you would always have both.

It's hard to be authentic when you're used to tikka masala, but in the new spirit of curry adventure I'm determined to try something new tonight.

(Didn't know you were from the subcontinent, actually. Someone made a cracking joke about a subcontinental breakfast the other day on my cold pizza thread....:D )

Isn't bread more of a feature of Northern Indian cooking where as Southern India prefer rice?

I prefer chapatis or parathas than naan. Means you can eat more curry and you don't end up feeling bloated. I sometimes go without rice or share.

I make my own chapatis every time I make a curry - dead simple and very nice :)
We're due to be making curry for around 30 people tomorrow though and I'm buggered if I'm making that many! Think it may be time to check out the new Asian bakery that has opened near me... apparently they make fresh naans as you watch them for 25p each

Me I never have rice with curry, just a garlic naan. Can't be arsed with rice, really.

It's not deep fried you numpty, the word 'shallow' is important there.
:p

Still I must admit that chooch hasn't made paratha sound too appetising. They should be beautifully crisp, light and a little flakey really.

Still reckon you can beat the simplicity of roti/chapati though - Naans become a little stodgy, particularly if you're not eating them straight out of the tandoor.

Chapatis are the don. I'm going to have either a veg jalfrezi with pilau and a chapati for dindins tonight

Thanks for reminding me that these things exist! I've not had one since eid festival at school :)
