Aha! That might explain why I thought that it wasn't salsify, i think we've had the black stuff before which looks like this.

we had these last year really sucks at your fingers when you peel it i think we used it in a soup and a fish pie look on the riverford website for a recipie?

Does it look a bit like this - in which case it is a Kohl Rabi (or Kohlrabi) which for some reason my Dad had an obssession with growing in the 1980's so we used to have the fucking things at almost every meal!

Bit of parsnip/turnip confusion there?

Yes, I think so.
They are a type of raddish I believe, Asian people use them alot which is why you can usually find them in Indian shops.
