Thanks Jessie.
The whole 'China' thing hit me while reading an article in Campaign - there are 285 MILLION people in Chine with an EU comparable standard of living in terms of disposable income...I nearly fell over reading it. EVERYTHING about that country is huge.
Unfortunately, there are also, by my own best estimate, some 400 million living on US$1.00 a day or less and another 300 million living on @ US$ 2. per day or less ( but more than US$ 1.00

).
Fuck!
FUCK!
I have been here for twelve years and have developed a DEEP connection with people.
I have HUGE problems with the CCP and am a vocal critic of the regime, and yet, this lies concomitant with a deep respect for what is happening in China AND the way the leadership is trying to manage what is, by any definition, an unmanagable situation.
I would go as far as to say that the current leadership recognises that democracy is the only solution in the medium term. They would and will relinquish power when the time comes.
Look at the number of hundreds of millions of people I mention above. Popular voting is impossible tomorrow.
But further liberalisation is, IMO, overdue.
Bottom line is, it's happening anyway. The central government now has tenuos control of the country as a whole, and local fiefdoms are rife and growing.
Does anyone here have any clue how to manage this?
It doesn't matter........
The Genie is out of the bottle, there is no turning back.
I believe that the rise of China will be a hugely beneficial influence on the world over the next few decades.
But it won't be easy.
Whatever! I'm here, this is my country, my people.
I have faith in the Chinese people.
