Cuba offers assistance the bush heads offer anarchy

Thanks Jessie.

The whole 'China' thing hit me while reading an article in Campaign - there are 285 MILLION people in Chine with an EU comparable standard of living in terms of disposable income...I nearly fell over reading it. EVERYTHING about that country is huge.

Indeed and if the recent training with the Russian military is anything to go by we'll be amazed by the size and power of their armed forces too...

Unfortunately, there are also, by my own best estimate, some 400 million living on US$1.00 a day or less and another 300 million living on @ US$ 2. per day or less ( but more than US$ 1.00  ).

:(

Fuck!

FUCK!

I have been here for twelve years and have developed a DEEP connection with people.

I have HUGE problems with the CCP and am a vocal critic of the regime, and yet, this lies concomitant with a deep respect for what is happening in China AND the way the leadership is trying to manage what is, by any definition, an unmanagable situation.

I would go as far as to say that the current leadership recognises that democracy is the only solution in the medium term. They would and will relinquish power when the time comes.

Look at the number of hundreds of millions of people I mention above. Popular voting is impossible tomorrow.

But further liberalisation is, IMO, overdue.

Bottom line is, it's happening anyway. The central government now has tenuos control of the country as a whole, and local fiefdoms are rife and growing.

Does anyone here have any clue how to manage this?

It doesn't matter........

The Genie is out of the bottle, there is no turning back.

I believe that the rise of China will be a hugely beneficial influence on the world over the next few decades.

But it won't be easy.

Whatever! I'm here, this is my country, my people.

I have faith in the Chinese people.

:)

Woof

My god..when you challenge this idiot to justify the manner in which the " USA all of the time ethos" allow`s its own citizens to float dead in the streets of a major city.....oh the silence is deafing..instead he reverts to slagging Europe and all else of..
Would that be the Europe that`s sending blankets..tents and emergency rations to the Southern states..would that be NATO that`s sending planes and personell to EVERY SOUTHERN STATE...would that be the EUROPEANS that are sending hundred`s of millions of emergency relief......well it just might be i guess..... because we see the difference between a BUSH administration and the needs of the AMERICAN people.....wanker.. why can`t you..and these people are your fellow country men....but i guess there the wrong courlor for you////

When you call someone a racist you have finally ran out of ammunition, typical.

Well, we should remember how Europe deals with its category 5 hurricanes, they always do a splendid job. France does a great job taking care of its elederly in extreme heat.

Greece does a masterful job as well

Of Course NATO is sending help. We are allies and will continue to be allies, I'm not disputing that.

I know you are a bitter minority.

The only power and prestige you get is due to your association with the US.
What kind of moronic, puffed up xenophobic shit, is this?

Ever travelled out of the US? You might be a little surprised by people's reaction to America's 'prestige'.

And as India and China take their place among the table of great powers Europes influence will keep withering.

You barely count.

Maybe it's a shortcoming of americans to make tallies of people this way. British barely count.

Problem is, you seem to do the same thing inside your own country, as we've seen from your treatment of the poor in the southern states this past week.

Wrong, the US will play India and China off each other.

Well, let's see if the admin can bring Iraq to a positive conclusion before we decide if they have the smarts to finesse India and China.

I am talking about international relations.

If the British PM is viewed to have some influence in Washington, the Israelis or Palestinians may approach the PM about final settlement negotiations for instance. Pakistan and India may lobby the PM to take up their side with the US president. If it perceived the PM has no influence he may not be consulted.

From a human stand point I believe a Brit is as important as an America or an Indian.

And yes, I have stamps in my passport.

I think they've messed up Iraq beyond repair. All they can do is run away, lie, and find someone to blame. But they're good at that so they may get away with it.

Doesn't really matter now does it.

Give it a couple of weeks and the begging for even more economic aid will become apparent.

This from the man who is supposedly too holy to use swearwords. You called me a "surplus cunt" the other day. How many Hail Marys is that?

I think the people of New Orleans (and the many trapped tourists who got no help or transport whatsoever) wanted and deserved to hear answers - and apologies - days ago.

Who's "we"? What are you doing? Spin as much as you like in your usual feeble way, but Dubya's coming out of this looking very bad - the whole world's media is slating him, including your beloved Fox news network.

are you REALLY sick enough to talk like it's some childish game of 'winning and losing', when there's the little matter of thousands dead, abandoned to their fate, and such a clearly woeful govt. response? do you understand the word 'priority'?
no, - PLEASE don't try to spell 'priority'.

Dearie dearie me.

Do you think that bunch of monkey's at the state department in charge of forward and strategic planning are a patch on the minds that will be guiding China's foreign policy to world dominance in the C21st? That the US will be able to 'play them off' against each other?

The US can't even play off France and the UK against each other, let alone a culture that has 6000 years experience of the subtleties of statecraft.

You only have to look at China's (long-termist as opposed to the USA's short-termist) diplomatic and political manouvering in Central Asia in the last 15 years to see who exhibits the better tactical and strategic policies.
I'm not saying that the USA will be swatted like a fly, because they won't, but hegemony? I very much doubt it.
China's policies are (at least for the moment) still aimed at benefitting the Chinese state as a political and social entity, whereas the US and most of the rest of "the west" have foreign policies geared to benefit groupings within the state.

I was reading an interesting article about China's regional FP (leaving aside stuff like the spratley's and Taiwan) and it's aid programme to the developing world and it's markedly different from the US - instead of going in and basically stitching up the local economy to serve as a supply feed for China they gear a lot of aid around actual development...obviously it's just another approach to securing a future hegemony but it's being done in a very different way to the US during the C20th.

That and the fact that the Chinese leadership are probably planning for the next 1000 years, not the next quarterly earnings filing which is where the US is at the moment...

China is also putting a lot of aid into Africa - which the Bushites are eyeing up as a source of cheap oil.

Where'd you spring back from!! :D

Yeah, the difference being that it isn't tied to things like disallowing abortion and birth control and tied aid packages to build Wal Mart strip malls all over...

True, but they're putting a lot of aid in Mugabe's Zimbabwe at the moment.

Consider this a 'note from underground' now that I'm in Dostoyevsky country.

I fear that when the Chinese reach superpower status we will see self interest which will make the current American administration seem positively benvolent. The Chinese will have the worst from the capitalist system combined with the worst from the communist/dictatorship system; ie a rampant free market economy backed up with oppresive political censorship.

Or...they'll realise that even China and it's corporations can't subsume the whole planet economically for however many centuries if they go round behaving like the US.

From what I've read Chinese state planning looks ahead at minimum to the next generation - 25 year - and as far ahead as the next 500. The US simply doesn't have the cultural nous to do that because it's history has been centred around the short term aquisition of 'stuff' (be that next Q share price or oil for the next 10 years) not around a unified strategic vision of country and culture - yes it plans things like resource sourcing (see Chomsky) but it pretty much leaves it's corporations to do as they please when it comes to expansion. Again, from what I've read China sees the world differently, and as Violent Panda pointed out on this thread

'China's policies are (at least for the moment) still aimed at benefitting the Chinese state as a political and social entity, whereas the US and most of the rest of "the west" have foreign policies geared to benefit groupings within the state.'

I should drop those fears then mate. No way at all. How in a million years can you use language to describe the US as 'benevolent', never bloody mind 'positively' so?!

No one can ever possibly match the US for sheer brutality and death by numbers. And we've not even seen the end of their killing yet.

Which island is that i wonder????. I`m not English boss and don`t come from G.B. so your wrong on that score for a start. I do come from the European contenient ( which is much bigger than your religious state) and you still have not answered a single question put to you....
If this is the best you can do with your " USA all of the time" mantra......god help your fellow country men who don`t subscribe to your point of view...
I actually feel sorry for you!!! All your rethoric has been laid bare in your country`s ( and presidents) inability to even save the lives of your own citizens...its remarkable to watch.....
And i hope the political fall out makes your fellow americans realise what a twat they have as a president....
