Crumpets.

Toasted - proper butter - marmite - cheese and back under a grill FTW!

OR just toasted with butter, but then I have to eat like, 8 of them :o

Toasted, with butter, and a bit of honey as the ONLY acceptable addition.

I don't know why and I'm not going to make it a rule, but for me there's something obscurely disgusting about combining the crumpet with any other food group. It distracts from the unique texture (as opposed to a thick film of melted butter which just, um, accentuates that texture.)

without wanting to spark up the crumpet vs pikelet wars again - anyone ever made crumpets at home? is it worth it or just a massive strategic hassle?

Question: my toaster will only take 3 crumpets at a time. this is not enough. toasting 4 under the grill would be ideal, but I can only seem to find packets of 6 crumpets on sale - crumpet crunch is on, clearly. should i:
- be disciplined, and limit self to 3 toaster-toasted crumpets a serving?
- be extravagant and buy 2 packs of crumpets to have 3 servings of 4 crumpets each? :hmm:
- give up crumpets until the 8-packs are reintroduced?
- make and eat innumerable quantitites of own crumpets and explode in a mass of dough?

Now I'm in two minds whether to try muffins tonight or continue experimenting with my flatmate's crumpets.

I think he has some marmite too. If I've had that before I've blocked it from my memory...

My local shop sells crumpets in packs of 8.

Crumpets and pikelets are not the same thing, but I have never tried to make crumpets at home. They are far too mysterious and exotic for that!

I like them as they come, no butter or anything :)

:mad:HERETIC. BURN HER. WITH FIRE.

just 2 more related questions sparked by the note that "crumpets make me feel proud to be British":

1) Does the crumpet feature in any question areas for the new Life In The UK Test for immigrants? If not, why not?

2) Lots of other nations have indigenous analogues to "classic British" teacakey things, muffinesque things, strange fruitcakes, Cheddarlike cheeses, etc etc etc. (It is rumoured that some people in foreign lands even eat roast beef.) But I have never heard of a crumpet even existing outside of these isles. Are crumpets really one of the last truly British phenomena? Has a crumpet even been sighted in the USA (narrowly, those 'Briddish' tea shops in NYC don't count...)? Is there no continental imitation of this proud product?

:)

The sight of a crumpet dripping in butter or anything else makes me heave. Dirty bastards :)

Crumpets. With butter, and Marmite.

Or - I discovered this accidentally - with butter, Marmite and Loganberry jam.

My husband likes them with peanut butter, I have not been converted.

They are good with cheese, under the grill.

I have to do mine under the grill as the toaster doesn't do it to perfection. Toast under the grill is better too...

Warburton crumpets are the best, followed by M&S.

Poached eggs on buttered crumpets is nice, as I found out after realising I'd run out of bread.

I can also vouch for cheese on crumpets.

Right. I forgot muffins and it turns out it's bovril my flatmate has, not marmite. Are they the same?

Well I haven't been able to get any muffins but the crumpets are now finished. I had most of them with just butter as my flatmate failed to have marmite. He did however have some plum jam so I had one with that. From my brief study I think I'm going to be a crumpet stick to just butter. I also note that they get less bouncy the longer you toast them.

Should I get round to buying some muffins I shall return.

Right. Muffins. Got some yesterday.

Don't see what the fuss is about. Toasted them and had them with butter only. Essentially they are round and like toast, only more so.

Crumpet wins so far for being more different from bread toast.

I applaud your intrepid explorations in the tricky and dangerous area of mutant bread hybrids but you are quite wrong in this. Muffins are a clearly superior concoction in every way.

I had crumpets for breakfast this morning thanks to this thead reminding me of their total loveliness :)

for the record they were made of win

Back up your position with evidence/blather or forever be ridiculed on the internets!
