Cross River Tram in Brixton?

I'm also pissed off that the council never sent us any literature - I only found out by chance.

You should have done - they say they sent the literature to everyone living within a kilometre or so of the proposed routes. Not sure where they got the data from - council tax/electoral roll maybe?

If all the technical / logistical / environmental factors add up, I favour the Canterbury Crescent / Popes Rd scheme over the Effra Rd one. It could easily be added to if an extension to Streatham were ever planned.

Reasons:
The stretch of High St from the junction with Atlantic Rd to Effra Rd is already more than congested with both vehicles and pedestrians
The removal of the central reservation (planned to give more pavement room) will result in more people dashing across the road. Trams stop in the middle of the road (afaik) - people will rush past a stationary tram into the path of a moving car - loads more accidents.
Trams ('streecars') are used very effectively in Central Toronto, BUT Canadian drivers have been taught to drive understanding that you never 'undertake' a stationary tram for fear of flattening an alighting passenger. British drivers do not have this culture - and many who drive in S London cannot be relied on to drive with any patience, safety or respect - so a major tram stop in several lanes of traffic could be a disaster. Much better in the backwater of Popes Rd.
The Popes Rd stop would put the trams into the heart of the planned new interchange between the back of the tube station and the overground - the tram will be very disabled accessible - and with the tube now accessible, it will make Brixton a better transport destination for wheelchair users etc.

Some good points here, but consider the advantages of the Effra Rd route:

- better integration with buses up Brixton Hill and Tulse Hill and to Cla'am
- takes passengers right into the centre of Brixton (not the "backwater" of Popes Rd as you correctly call it)
- could still have a stop by Atlantic Rd for integration with the overland station
- the disruption to traffic could actually dissuade people from driving (the corollary to the increased traffic levels that come with the "predict and provide" model)

I share Ol Nick's doubts about the viability of the tram plan, although the counter-argument is that there is a whole class of people who simply won't travel on buses but consider trams to be "upmarket" (and it is this class who are also likely to drive).

Works in KL

and Bangkok has one, as does Russia and Sydney and Japan and loads of other places.

We're stuck in the dark ages.

In fact, we should have a MagLev monorail

Heh, and they don't get the kind of planning objections that developments like this always end up having! Must be nice for a city council to be able to just draw a line where a monorail or other public transport system will go and say 'That's it, anyone on the line tough shit.'

Well if people will go buying houses on routes that may possibly be needed in the future for Maglev monorails... :D

The more I think about this scheme the less of a good idea it seems. As it is about half of South London passes through Brixton every morning either on the bus or by tube and central Brixton can barely cope with it. Is it really a good idea to increase the flow of people at rush hours? Wouldn't it make more sense to route it to some part of South London that doesn't have a tube and doesn't have the congestion/crowding problems of Brixton. Why not use it as a regeneration tool and end it somewhere like Loughborough Junction which is dying on its arse?

That's why there's been this consultation phase, init.

Best I can tell, the idea is to take some of the ever-growing pressure off the tube in the central area - as the improved busses have done. You can only do it in the medium term (if at all) above ground level.

They might sell it locally as great for Brixton - and it might be - but Brixton is just one end (terminus) of a project whose primary purpose and goals lay elsewhere. Imo.

 TfL realy are a bunch of retards arent they.

er.. next time you want to insult someone, better check out your facts first eh? it's organised by lambeth as a family event.

Can you answer any of these questions before we "comment on where the tram shall run"?
-Position of tracks in the road, size of trams, breakdown of road usage when tram is operational, construction durations, impact on traffic during construction.

Me personally, no. But for the consultation period to have begun then the plans will include all of the above.

So, why are *they* retards?
For thinking we are stupid enough not to know that *they* (is this a new type of syntax?) have already decided where their white elephant will run to/from.

Shame they wont divulge them so we can make an informed decision then eh;) But hey face painting:D

So how long before you can tell me where I can find this (very basic) information?

Oh, I see. Well, you obviously know more than me.

I was under the impression that the money wasn't even available yet.

No , they're not "retards", but you seem to doing a good job.

Fwiw, there are pdf's of the different route proposals on . . . guess which site ?

Have you tried contacting anyone at TfL?
I was under the impression I just had;)

That isnt the point . The point is TfL do what the fuck they like regardless of what people say in consultations. Nanny knows best eh?

So not only are you obnoxious, but you're also too lazy to get off your arse to do something you believe in. Nice. Though I guess we shouldn't expect anything more from someone who thinks it's ok to drive at 170mph on the motorway, and then brag about it on the internet.

I don't speak for TfL. If you want a conversation with them that doesn't involve face paint I suggest you grow up a bit eh?

Hectually Ive written to them (perhaps its in your in tray, maybe less time on internet at work is required?)
You mentioned facepaint first.
Also dont take me out of context fucktard (actualy not that its any of your business stalker,I had a blues and twos escort)

Mentioned what first?

As for taking you out of context, it's hardly immaterial is it? You want to contribute to a debate on transport policy, yet you drive at dangerous speeds. I'd say that kind of rules you out for any rational discussion. I'd be only to happy for you to prove me wrong.
