Croatia -v- England

Football's where the real money is in televised sport, you couldn't do it by sport.

Setanta offer a cheap, easy alternative to the Sky option. Bravo, I say. I don't support a Prem team, so no odds to me about needing two subscriptions. Just as long as I can sit in front of a match of a Sat/Sun with a can of beer, I don't mind.

So, football coverage should cater for those who don't actually give a shit about the teams or league? Are you sure this is a good thing?

Personally I fucking love Setanta for chipping into Sky's empire and providing a decent sports channel for a very affordable £10 a month with the need to sign up to loads of other shit.

If we're going to have to pay to view sport then better £10 per month Setanta than £50 per month Sky. Also, as has been said, not their fault if no-one will fork out for the highlights.

Long live Setanta ;)

FYI Setanta is now £13 per month - though they're offering 2 months at half price for new subscribers at the moment to cash in on the England games

reckon they'll surprise a few people this evening. Croats are talking like they just have to turn up to win, and they'll be far better organised than the last time they were out there. Good for a draw at least I reckon, which is a quality result considering Croatia's record in Zagreb.

Doesn't upset me too much, but I do enjoy calling Setanta cunts.

For all the talk of protected events a few years back, you can't even get highlights of World Cup qualifiers now unless you pay extra. Which is a bit shit seeing as it's the biggest competition for the nation's favourite/national sport. And it's also an entirely avoidable situation - if Sultana weren't playing the restrictive sub-Murdoch cunt card that is.

OI! I thought I had the rights to (annoyingly and repeatedly) calling Setanta, Sultana. Get back man or I'll have the law onto you.

incredibly i'm going to go for a 3-0 England win in this game. 45-1, bookies at lunchtime

i think we can rush em with swift pasing movements - and i like the look of the side with beckham, lampard, rooney, joe cole and walcott attacking (as long as that is what they do, attack). if they play Heskey style we can forget it

Erm, didn't they have an advertising campaign where they 'amusingly' corrected people who got confused and called them Sultana by mistake.

Oh, how witty it was. Back in the days when Setanta came across like the plucky little guy fighting Sky, rather than a bunch of faceless, restrictive cunts stopping most of Blighty watching World Cup qualifiers involving their team.

Eh? That's not what I'm saying at all.

Pre-Setanta: Man U fan has to pay a minimum of £40 a month to watch Prem football at home

Setanta: Man U fan has to pay £13 a month to watch Prem football at home

There are no less games on Sky than there were pre-Setanta.

Booooring.

jeez, watch it on the 'net already.

Playing Heskey is probably the best chance we've got.

For some people Setanta has been good, for those already with Sky it has been a bit crap. The fact is national sports should be on terrestrial and not just the finals etc.

I'm going to the pub to watch this one, I've not that done that in years as I've got Sky. Quite looking forward to it actually.

Pre-Setanta: Man U fan has to pay a minimum of £40 a month to watch Prem football at home

Setanta: Man U fan has to pay £13 a month to watch Prem football at home

There are no less games on Sky than there were pre-Setanta.

But, if you a completionist, you now actually have to pay £53 for both packages to see all of your team's games

I completely agree, it should be on terrestrial, but it's not going to happen so I welcome a cheaper alternative to televised football.

I'm not a Man U fan, so games involving my team are thin on the ground at the best of times, and even thinner now they've been split into two subscriptions. You said it was good for you as you don't care who you watch. I do care, and I have to pony up for two subscriptions to see them.

There are no less games on Sky than there were pre-Setanta

Does that mean even more 'big-4' super-sunday extravaganzas? Joy.

Look, you may think this is all well and good as there is a cut-price alternative to sky, but all this means to me is that they've spread the games I would be extremely interested in across two independent services who both want paying. It is a shitty system.

But as far as I'm aware there are still the same number of games on Sky, so they haven't split the games, they've just made more available. Which is a good thing even if you don't subscribe as they'll be shown down the pub!

how so? I assumed cause its payed by the month, i could just pay for those two months and thats it. Thought there would be some catch though.

There were a lot of people complaining on 5 live this morning about how hard it is to cancel, apparently they just keep on collecting....

The procedure is 60 days after your next payment date, and you have to write only, no phone or email. It seems they do put a lot of barriers in your way.

They sound like fuckin bastards then.

Croatia are a good team but England seem to fair better against the good teams (apart from when that loser Mclaren was in charge). I fancy England to get a draw from this match.

My overall feeling is though is that it is time for a bit of a clear out, lets start building towards the next Euros or soomething. The problem at the moment it's just so same old same old. Get the kids in and lets get some excitement back, if I was the manager I'd just be thinking 'I might as well be hung as a sheep for a lamb'.

I could stand to be corrected, but I do not think this is true - there still appear to be the same number of games on a Saturday at 3:00 pre-Setanta, which cannot be aired live in the UK, so I can't see how sky can still show the same number if setanta also have a share.

Checking schedules, it appears Setanta have taken sky's 5:30 saturday and 8:00pm monday evening slots. Sky don't show any other games to make up for it as far as I can see.

Or am I missing something?

Re cancellng Setanta...can't you just stop the Direct Debit?

If you are on direct debit yes, depending on the terms of your agreement. However a lot of people sign up to a monthly charge taken off their debit or credit card. You have no right to stop this only Setanta can.

Oh and apparently dealing with them on the phone is nigh on impossible, you are on hold for 15 minutes and then the line go's dead.

I dunno what it is with these Irish companies, has anyone ever had cause to contact Ryanair?

i just put my bet on England 3-0, and as soon as i got out of the bookies i was not concentrating, screwed up the slip and threw it in some rubbish. lost. went back in the bookies and they said it's fine as long as i re-do the slip if i win the money. isn't that just fab?

Ah, my apologies. I thought there were extra games shown. I can see why you'd be fucked off then. Not so good for Sky subscribers, good for everyone else. Have Sky reduced their prices accordingly seeing as there's a third less football?

I'm quite annoyed I won't even be able to watch any highlights - World Cup qualifiers should be on terrestrial television, no doubt about it. I'll try to watch it online, or failing that listen to it on the radio.

Ever the optimist when it comes to England, I'm expecting at least a draw tonight. Surely it can't be as bad as last time we played them?
