Cristiano Ronaldo - he da man

Heskey was a potentially great player at one time. Like most English players though he sadly never lived up to it. I'm sure that in many other countries, talents who look great when young wouldn't be destroyed in the way we do.

Heskey in his pomp (which happened to be when he was 18-20 unfortunately) was magnificent, I saw him live a few times then and assumed he'd be a great, as did many others far more qualified than me. Collymore was another chap who didn't live up to it and the highest level, Fowler too. Gerrard will follow I suspect.

Other countries have their "great" failures too, Argentina have prime candidates in Ortega and Riquelme; sometimes it just won't transcend.

Lots of players have performed well in the European Cup, it's at the highest level where historical legends emerge. Gerrard has been found wanting.

Good player though, just not a great. Yet. And I doubt he'll become one.

I'm sure there are plenty of greats who didn't win anything at international level though. What about Ferenc Pushkas, for instance? OK played in a hungary team generally thought to be the best team not to win a world cup, spanked germany 8-3 in the group stage only to lose unluckily 2-1 to the jammy germans in the final, but still...

Pushkas was highly regarded at the highest level without winning anything, Gerrard isn't as-yet.

Anyway I'm not going argue about Steven bloody Gerrard's talent or foibles, can't be arsed RD.
