criminal record checks

By vetting and checking etc. Its not so difficult. Better than giving the Police the right to disclose exactly what they deem fit.

The police don't have the right to disclose what they deem fit. Enhanced checks will include any info that is relevant, such as the fact that someone like Ian Huntley had been arrested and investigated but not found guilty. If only criminal records were checked, someone who's been investigated lots of times but not found guilty will not be flagged up.

I agree the system we have isn't perfect and their are flaws, but tbh, I'm not really sure what you're objecting too.

Enhanced CRB Check
Also referred to as an Enhanced Disclosure. These are for posts that involve a far greater degree of contact with children or vulnerable adults. In general the type of work will involve regularly caring for, supervising, training or being in sole charge of such people. Examples include a Teacher, Scout or Guide leader. Enhanced checks are also issued for certain statutory purposes such as gaming and lottery licences.

This level of check involves an additional level of check to those carried out for the Standard CRB check - a check on local police records. Where local police records contain additional information that may be relevant to the post the applicant is being considered for, the Chief Officer of police may release information for inclusion in an Enhanced check. Exceptionally, and in a very small number of circumstances (typically to protect the integrity of current police investigations), additional information may be sent under separate cover to the Countersignatory and should not be revealed to the applicant.

Yes - I want to know what they 'deem relevant', how they decide, and how its verified that this power isn't abused.

I'd also like to know if there are any guidelines as to what is 'deemed relevant', and the applicant concerned should be notified of any disclosures made and why they were made (unless there's a good reason why they shouldn't), and have the right of comeback.

Deemed relevant would be things like if someone was applying for a position to work with children and they had been arrested and charged on suspicion of child porn offences or sexual abuse etc. Which is as it should be IMO.
