Cricket World Cup 2015

Wow. Only caught the last little bit of this at work but at least I'm working with a bunch of saffas. Onwards.

Strangely predictable WC so far. The four best teams duly made it to the semis, which were won by the teams I thought would win them.

But I'm going for a New Zealand triumph on Sunday. I've backed them all along, and I suspect that someone in that team has a match-winning performance in them. First match outside NZ, conditions likely to favour Aus, who looked extremely good against India, but still, it means more to the New Zealanders and if they can go out there and perform with no fear, they might just do it.

NZ to nick it in a thriller...

280 will be enough. McCullums effort was pathetic though. 3 balls, 3 attempted slogs against the best bowler in the world. Arrogant idiot.

Ah shit. :(

He was wrong to go to apartheid SA. But he was right about most things cricket, and I liked very much that he refused to work for Sky.

A voice of my childhood.

He both went to play in apartheid SA and managed another team to do so after proper sanctions - decades after the full story was exposed for all to see.

There's no point in lying - i never trust a man whose face never moves. His cricket knowledge was impeccable but over the last 3 decades i heard/saw him he had became as bad as any chortling public school BBC test match special clown. Saying little bit with the authority of having once had something to say.

Yeah, it was the late 70s managing I was referring to. No excuse for doing that.

Still sad, though. Last I heard him was on the Aussie TV, where he was one of three and didn't say much. But in the 80s, he and Jim Laker were the voices of cricket for me. Childhood stuff like that stays with you.

I've got a really bad Richie Benaud (and Peter Falk) anecdote to share if anyone's interested.

I'll assume someone is.

When I was a kid me and my wee brother and my Dad went to the filming of a pro-am thing at Gleneagles. Loads of famous types were there - Sean Connery, Christopher Lee, Brucie and Anthea, Ronnie Corbett, the lot. The two pro players were Lee Trevino and Seve (who touched my head). Anyway, after the prizes were given out, me and bro were scooting about for autographs. Falk and Benaud were standing together, but my pen ran out while Mr Falk was signing my book. He rummaged through his pockets for a pen while Benaud walked away. Mr Falk got a pen, finished his signature, and called Benaud back to sign the book, which he did. I like to think it was a "Just one more thing" moment in real life.

(Trevino was funny on the course, but not interested after his round, he got in a car and left. Seve was amazing for ages after the thing finished - everyone who was there must have got a pic and an autograph. Same with Sean Connery. Christopher Lee let my wee brother sit in his car - a Cadillac or something - and pretend to drive it)

Beat that rather unfocussed anecdote!
