Cricket on Five/1st Test

He's right though.

"Deserve" means nothing. England had to bowl out Sri Lanka twice to win the game - if they fail (as Sri Lanka failed in the Lord's Test last time they toured) then they don't "deserve" anything.

Many people may feel it gets less funny each time.

The fact that you knew which player I was talking about may make my point for me.

It seems to be contagious too. :(

No he's not.

"It's Test cricket and nobody deserves anything" is just as daft as me saying they deserve it. "If England were the better team they would have polished Sri Lanka yesterday". Yes, all matches won by the better side are wrapped up in three days aren't they.

Kulasekara was dropped on 14, he's now 59no, the seamers have beaten the bat countless times or they've gotten an edge that's fallen short. Now, maybe England the team "deserve" all they get for dropping catches, but the bowlers certainly don't. They've bowled incredibly well and deserve the win, unfortunately it's been a shite two days on the catching front.

Anyway this is becoming very interesting the lead is growing, Sri Lanka might even have thoughts of victory themselves soon with Murali ready to unleash himself.

One of the great game-saving innings of all time by the Sri Lankans, albeit aided by some shocking fielding, indifferent captaincy and bowling, and the absence of half the Ashes-winning attack. Kudos to them though, and all achieved before Jayasuriya dons his whites; on the second-innings performance he wont get in the Second Test side :D

Overall its probably a blessing in disguise for England, Flintoff can go back to being the worlds best all-rounder and Vaughan can be welcomed back in with no "Well Freddie whooped the Sri Lankans, give him the captaincy" comments once things go a bit sour. Harmison is on his way back as well, and Simon Jones has managed to not further injure himself posing for Cosmo, so by the Pakistan series we might have our first-choice attack back, possibly substituting Panesar for Giles.

And fielding is part of cricket too, is it not? If England have fielded badly then how can anybody say they deserve to win?

"Catches win matches." Or not, as the case may be.

To my mind, if anybody's entitled to the word "deserve" - which doesn't mean a lot anyway - it's the Sri Lankans for their application.

Wow, that draw felt as good as a win for me, I was despairing after our first innings. Got to love the batting performance, captain did so well, shame about our bowling though  , bring back Zoysa I say ;)

.... I felt I had to say something as the token? Sri Lankan here

Well it was 4 days yesterday not 3. And yes, a better side which had a team almost beaten after 2 days like England had Sri Lanka, wouldn't have left them escape from the situation they were in. England were simply not ruthless enough to put Sri Lanka away.

After Fridays play England were so far ahead the players were booking Sunday lunch with their families but instead they put in a fucking laughable display of test cricket. So how exactly did they "deserve it"? They deserved fuck all. They deserve to be slaughtered for a disgraceful display.

9:20am I posted that by the way. Easy to be wise after the event.

Ten dropped catches from England tells its own story really, they handed the game to Sri Lanka on a plate; after bowling and batting so well it's disappointing to to come away with only a draw.

In a way the selections were vindicated as Moody opted for the bowlers who can bat a little better, and thanks to some woeful fielding from us (and excellent batting from Sri Lanka of course) they did the business. However one can't imagine England being so generous next time and I'd plump for Malinga instead of Kulasekara, Malinga can actually bowl which is always a bonus when picking bowlers I find.

Despite Mahmood's early success the inexperienced bowling attack didn't help. I can't see Sir Lankan tail-enders surviving many Harmison overs if he plays next time.

And Monty's really going to have to pick his game up. Unless he starts spinning like Shane Warne his batting and fielding are going to count against him.
