CRB Check Help

No, because private households are not employers exempt from the ROA. If you're a childminder you have to be registered with Ofsted though and presumably you get checked as part of the registration process.

Yes, but I'm not a childminder I'm a nanny - and I can't apply for a CRB check for myself, and neither can the family I work for. I think this is a big drawback to the CRB system, as I would hazard a guess at there being thousands of nannies working without CRB checks.

Don't you have to be registered as a nanny?

There's a voluntary Ofsted registration, but I'd guess the majority of nannies don't bother - the main reason for registering is so the parent can use childcare vouchers, but of course most nanny employers aren't going to be using vouchers. Personally I'm not prepared to do the extra courses and get insurance to become registered since it won't benefit me.

I guess then if you don't want to register then you can't get checked.

What's the difference between a childminder and a nanny anyway?

A childminder runs a childcare business from their own home, and is therefore regulated by Ofsted like a nursery would be. A nanny is an employee of a private family.

That makes sense, thanks :)

I guess then it's up to the private employer to either hire a nanny who is registered, get someone who is recommended, or take a risk.

That's what it comes down to. If you go through a nanny agency they can get a CRB check done for you, but I don't see why individuals can't apply on their own behalf

I have one now through my uni but everyone who's employed me previously has just had to rely on my innocent face :D

The Ofsted registration is ridiculous imo - I'd have to pay £100, plus get public liability insurance, plus take a new first aid course and a "core skills" qualification to register.

Individuals can't apply because CRB checks are only for jobs that are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. If individuals could apply then employers who aren't exempt would probably ask individuals to get one, thus getting round the ROA. Have a read of those NACRO leaflets.
